DESCRIPTION
In 1933, the airline Deutsche Lufthansa ordered from the aircraft manufacturer Dornier a high-speed six-seat mail-passenger aircraft for servicing European air routes. The aircraft created during development combined many innovative aviation technologies of that time. Unfortunately, this did not save it from failing on the civilian market. However, besides “Lufthansa,” the Do 17 soon also attracted the interest of the Reich Ministry of Aviation, which wanted to obtain a combat aircraft with bomb armament that could be concealed as a civilian plane. This would allow bypassing the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, which prohibited Germany from having military aviation. As a result, by the mid-1930s Dornier had already put into serial production a bomber designated Do 17 E-1. After undergoing combat trials on the front of the Spanish Civil War, the aircraft quickly gained recognition among pilots thanks to numerous successful missions.
