I’ll preface this by saying it may not be a problem for players with a nice PC setup and large monitor right in front of them, because they can see the minimap better.
As a console peasant, I often find myself underestimating the distance from where I’ve ordered my squad to hold to where I want to place my individual soldier by what often turns out to be a very frustrating handful of meters.
Having to go a few extra steps to get an AT round into the side of a tank, only to see the “orders cancelled, you’re too far from your squad” message appear, and having the entire rest of the squad mowed down - often by the very tank you’re trying to kill - blithely strolling across open ground in a direct line to where you currently are is just one of those crushingly frustrating, but recurring, moments that will sour you on the game for the rest of that battle.
By default, there’s a lot of information on in the HUD in the lower left quadrant of the screen, ranging from the minimap and various tool tips all the way down to individual kill counters for each squad member. So I don’t think this would add any clutter.
The distance to the squad marker is something the game must already be tracking, as it knows exactly when the (I believe 50 meter) threshold is crossed, so I don’t think this involves adding another logical process to the software.
What I’m asking for is that the length of the “tether” from the player-controlled soldier to the ordered “hold position” be displayed in the squad portion of the HUD. If we wanted to be really fancy, it could turn red in the final five meters, or something like that.
