I seen Russians running around dressed as the NVKD similar to the assaulters 1 in Moscow. Anyone know what squad you customize to look like that?

They are most likely AI squads. There are known for having uniforms that are unavailable for us players (another example is Poeadot camo for Germans in Berlin)

Or that some German AI units in Stalingrad carry the Gewehr 33/40

Yeah, it’s sad that we don’t have those uniforms yet. My guess is that they wanted to leave themself something to provide “new customisation” options with each battlepass season, just like they introduce new content.
