So turns out there’s a cool history behind the decal on the premium FP-5, long story short the US Navy was really strict about nose art compared to the other branches but the carrier these guys were based on didn’t care to much about said rule, they got to keep the decals for a year and a half until they’re home carrier (The USS Princeton) was scuttled after suffering a crippling attack during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, those who were in the air at the time would be forced to land on other carriers, including the USS Essex, who’s commanding officer was so upset over the decals, he had them painted over overnight.
