Core idea
Split points awarded for vehicle kill among all of the vital components of said vehicle. Award small amount of points for destroying tracks, transmission, barrel, engine and every other part, in such a way that destroying them all in one shot would give the player landing it the same amount of points as blowing the tank up grants today.
Reasoning behind the suggestion
Rationale behind this change could be boiled down to two main points:
- Lessen the impact of kill stealing.
Damaging the tank severely enought to force it’s withdrawal from combat, or incapacitating it all together is almost as impactful as destroying it completelty, thus it should be rewarded accordingly. There are many situations in which player doing lion’s share of work knocking out enemy vehicle isn’t compensated fairly. For example: t-34 player engages enemy Panther. Most of the Panthers model is obscured by the terrain, with only accesable part being the turret, on which he menages to land a penetrating hit, destroying both turret drives, mg, gun and killing 3 crew members. Remaining 2 crewmen bail out, t-34 player recieves 90 points. He is unable to finish of the Panter due to ammo racks being obscured. A minute later positions shift, someone else finishes off already knocked out tank recieving 150 points, despite it having neither risk on impact on the match of the original engagement. Splitting point reward between the components would lead to much fairer rewarding of impactful actions, lessening player’s frustration. - Incentivise cooperation and support play.
In current system the only player that is rewarded significantly for fighting enemy vehicle is the one landing an ammo rack shot. This disincentivises support play, such as targeting enemy tank’s tracks to immobilize it in friendly AT’s killzone, since supporting player recieves next to no reward. Currently optimal play is to ignore enemy vehicles which you can’t reliably completely destroy yourself. Awarding points for destroying components would remedy that, as actions like damaging gun barrels or tracks would no longer feel like doing all the work so someone else can reap all the reward. Making for much healthier environment in which you cooperate with your teammates instead of fighting for the precious killshot.
Conclusion
This change may not be enough to incentivise proper support play, new point bonuses like rewarding players for vehicles they immobilised or disarmed being destroyed may be needed to adress the problem fully. However I think splitting vehicle kill point reward among it’s components, instead of awarding it all for the explosion would be a step in the right direction nonetheless. It would increase fairness and incentivise cooperation inside teams. What do you think of my suggestion?
