Why is it that some vehicles and tanks have their proper names and planes on Pacific are called random names ie Ap-1 - is this because Gaijin may not have the rights to use their real name (why would Grumman say no?)
There are loads of WW2 multiplayer games, I don’t think I have noticed dummy names before?
Don’t think it’s copy right. War Thunder, also owned by Gaijin, doesn’t seem to have this issue. Stuff like F-4F is a military designation, not even sure if those are copywriteable.
The “Grumman Wildcat” might be copywriteable but F4F probably not.
The Crusader in Tunisia is a Crusader III but it´s just called “Crusader”. Might be worth correcting that if they want to add the previous models as a premium or whatever.
The copyright thing really doesn’t make sense given the many other games throughout the years that have used the proper designations of the aircraft.
Here in the US, Activision won a lawsuit from AM General that allows the use of Humvees in their games without licensing and despite active trademarks.
I’m just curious how the decision was made that specifically Grumman airframes used by the US military over 80 years ago are suddenly off limits exclusively for Enlisted
Why not? I’d like to know a real reason why they made such an odd choice because I care about the minimal amount of authenticity brought by using the proper names for the equipment represented in game.
If it’s not something you care about you’re being oddly defensive about it, and if you do care why are you coming down on the side of corporate censorship?
Notice that all of the funny named aircraft are Grumman aircraft? Grumman has weird copyright things going on with it’s planes, WT needed to directly licence the names from Grumman IIRC. Devs are probably too cheap to do the same here.
So I finally just went and searched thru Northrop Grumman’s trademarks and sure enough; they have active trademarks for all of their WWII aircraft specifically related to models, toys, and games.
I guess being one of the worlds largest, richest and most politically powerful arms dealers in the world isn’t enough if they can’t squeeze some revenue from WWII enthusiasts too.
I still think it’s bullshit, but now I’m more mad at NG
Well Lockheed has the same type of trademark for the P-38, they just arn’t nearly as anal about royalties and whatnot. Still, guess we can expect the P-61 to be the PF-1 or or something if we ever get that.
