BV 155 B-1
HISTORY
The Blohm und Voss BV 155 B-1 was a German single-engine high-altitude fighter aircraft of World War II. The BV 155 was a complete reimagining of the experimental Me 155, which was intended to serve various roles, from carrier-based fighters to fighter-bombers and high-altitude interceptors. The high-altitude fighter project was actually awarded to Blohm und Voss in August 1943. However, after assessing the situation, they decided to completely redesign the fighter. Meanwhile, the Luftwaffe’s need for high-altitude interceptors only grew, proportionate to the increase in Allied bombing raids.
The new high-altitude interceptor, designated BV 155, underwent several modifications during development. The BV 155 V-1, which first flew in September 1944, featured a pressurized cabin, a turbocharger, and an engine optimized for high-altitude operation. However, inadequate cooling at high angles of attack forced the designers to relocate the radiators under the wing panels, simultaneously increasing their surface area. Furthermore, the second prototype received a teardrop-shaped canopy, significantly improving visibility. With these modifications, the BV 155 V-2 flew in February 1945, but was soon damaged. The BV 155 V-3 was built as a replacement, differing only in the installation of a new engine, the DB-603U.
