→ 48 of the 50 surviving the battle at Kursk. On 2 January 1944 they returned to the Nibelungenwerke factory in Austria where they received upgrades. They following upgrades were made:
- the addition of a ball-mounted MG-34 in the hull front
- a new commander’s cupola (modified from the standard StuG III) for improved vision
- re-designed armored engine grates (for better bullet and shrapnel protection)
- the application of Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine paste.

→ “Ferdinand” lacks the option to protect himself against infantry. That where the “Elefant” comes in. Equipped with a 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun it can protect himself a little bit better
