Arty smoke

The option to call in a smoke barrage or even toxic gas that will linger in the area for 10-15 seconds. Gas masks will be a “backpack” option we can take to counter this.

smoke yes - perhaps eventually although it was usually used for planned attacks.

Gas - no.

toxic gas was illegal in WW2, and not used by any combatants in Western Europe - although several had stockpiles “just in case” and Germany used some against the Soviets - infamously a Luftwaffe air raid on the Italian Port of Bari caused major problems by destroying ship full of mustard gas, resulting in at least 2000 dead!!

Could be WP instead of gas.

I like smoke but no gas

One of the mysteries of WWII was the fact Hitler, even at the very end refused to let the military use gas, even against the Soviets. I don’t believe it was out of altruistic humanism, but fear of retribution.

He had been gassed in WW1, so theory is basically he refused to countenance its use due to deep seated fear of it - although various toxic chemicals were used again soviet fortifications notably in Odessa and Sevastopol.

The only issue with smoke is that how do you moderate it?

Like, if you have several people on both teams all spamming smoke, it would be terrible for gameplay.

The need for smoke is circumstantial. Like, if you’re defending, you generally wouldn’t want any smoke anywhere, unless it was to cover your spawns area as your teammates ran to where they need to defend.

The only solution that I can think of is to make a smoke barrage only active for the attacking team on the Invasion gamemode.

And even then spamming it would make it OP - there are reasons it wasn’t used more often - eg

  • it made recognizing the target for an advance difficult
  • interfered with artillery and air support
  • could confuse troops as to which direction they were moving in
  • troops get silhouetted when advancing out of smoke before they can actually see what is ahead of them

So if enlisted simply put it in as a nice easy way to mask attackers it would be a disaster for hte game.

Smoke was traditionally used ON the target, not on your troops.
With that said, very mixed on this.
On the one hand, super handy.
On the other hand, would completely trivialize a lot of map design (perma smoke bunkers/mg nests, defender positions on attack/defend missions, etc).

No - smokole was used in front of hte target to screen your troops - usually your troops would then have to advance through it.

Putting it ON a target is pretty pointless - now even your aerial observers can’t see it, and hte enemy can move around unseen!
