Arty could definitely use a rework:
-
Currently, enemy can see your strikes marked on the map before they arrive. This makes no sense and undermines the effect of the artillery strike, which are supposed to soften defenses and interdict reinforcement lines - not close off areas to combat. Early warning should be eliminated for enemy bombers and arty, and retained for friendly strikes.
-
The reason they felt the need to do this in the first place was because, currently, the arty is too deadly - 9/10 cases when I get caught in arty strike, my entire squad is instantly killed, even if they are prone or in trenches/foxholes. This makes no sense; arty should be lethal to standing targets in the open, and much less effective against prone/entrenched targets.
-
No FF with arty and bombers creates the absurd situation that attackers are incentivized to call arty strikes directly on the objective and then run right into it, while defenders are forced to retreat. FF should be restored.
Combining all of these changes would allow arty to once again be fairly used in accordance with combined arms doctrine: by attackers to soften defenses ahead of assault (but not with the expectation that it will clear all defenders); and by defenders to interdict attacker reinforcements (again, slowing them down due to the need to find cover, but not necessarily causing mass casualties).
