After the nerf to artillery in the latest patches, it has become significantly and ahistorically weak. I played a full-length invasion match on D-Day w/ radio operators in every squad & a dedicated squad w/ frequent artillery - and I got a whooping 1 kill the entire match from artillery. This is ludicrous. And, yes, I aimed properly, I know where to target strikes.
In fact, artillery is now so weak that I don’t think even 10 people were killed by artillery during the whole match. I was struck by artillery a few times and, due to the new delays, I was able to evacuate with plenty of time - once I had two weak explosions on my sides and got slightly concussed, but that was it. I would argue that a player now has to be tactically incompetent, or extremely unlucky, in order to die from artillery strikes.
Seriously, that’s not a cannonade anymore, it’s firecrackers. Things weren’t different in other matches - I would cheer if I got 2 or 3 artillery kills in an entire match. Meanwhile bomber planes are now the most extremely OP thing in the entire game. The team’s bomber planer ALWAYS finishes first place, often with 2 to 3x more kills than the 2nd place. Each bombing run scores on average at least some 10 kills (compared to artillery strikes which now don’t average even 1 kill per strike). That’s not realistic, bombers didn’t do such damage to infantry (they preferred to strike buildings or vehicles, not soldiers on the field). In fact, historically, artillery was the main source of infantry casualties, but now it is an absolute joke. And this is not just a problem in regards to historicity, but it leaves a massive unbalance in the game, which is not good.
Something needs to change. Either nerf bombers, rollback some of the artillery changes (especially the extra-time before the strikes & the low-damage ranging shots) or do both because, currently, bomber planes are way overpowered and at least 2 to 3 times more effective than anything else in game. That’s not realistic, that’s not fun. Boom - 20 people die from a bomb dropped! Bot AI can’t take cover at all. Yet artillery was nerfed…
Artillery has been made so weak that despite the changes that now only allow 1 strike at a time (which were good, though I would argue each team should have 2 strikes, just like they can have 2 tanks), even with that, I had no problem calling in strikes whenever I wanted - because nobody seems to even bother using them anymore. That’s how weak they are. I feel like a fool for having added radio operators to my squads, in place of other troop classes, because they are now so severely weak.
Artillery and the frequent bombings - requiring people to play tactically, not mindlessly rush, and constantly take cover, as in real life - were one of the things that I really liked about this game. I would even argue that, in a Squads game, most of the kills should come from explosives (as was the case in world war 2). Now it has been partly ruined. Please do something about it.
