Artillery and tanks

I do not understand how I can hit tanks directly with artillery and get NO damage and yet when my tank gets hit it gets destroyed. Is there a way to determine which type of artillery shell gets used or is it random…I saw on a splash screen that the type of arty shell can be chosen.

you can only choose between HE Shells and Smoke Shells

and as for your artillery not killing tanks.Generally artillery is best used against infantry since it covers a large area. Now you may have just gotten unlucky when the artillery hit your tank and it exploded, best course of action is to get out of the large red circle that is shown on the map and indicates the artillery’s radius

Thanks…I get killed regularly by enemy arty when in a tank…It is frustrating

In February 1945 during the Lower Silesian offensive operation, one captured ex-German “Panther” tank with an experienced crew from 4th Tank Corps under the command of the Hero of the Soviet Union Lt. N. I. Ageev was used in a reconnaissance mission. At dusk, the tank passed through the forest, attacked from the flank and destroyed three enemy “Panther” tanks, but then, during the retreat to Soviet positions, it was hit by enemy artillery and damaged. After the battle the tank was written off due to lack of spare parts and maintenance problems.

But in the game the artillery do nothing to the tanks :mechanical_arm:

It depends on the tank.

If it’s something lime the m13, with open top, it will explode in mere seconds.

If it’s a big bulky thing like a KT, it will completely ignore the HE shells meant for infantry.

NOOOOOO SHIT
What else do you think is the main cause of temporary and irretrievable losses in armored equipment in literally every war? Artillery and AT mines.

Probably other tanks and AT cannons. I cannot find the source, but I have read somewhere that about 10- 15 % of WW II tanks was destroyed by the artillery.

I dont think so. Tanks are paradoxically rare on the battlefield. And you cant count tank destroyers and SPGs as tanks. And there are many more of AT guns, AT rifles, AT rocket lunchers and recoilless guns present in area than tanks. And all of those are usually doing its job. Tank vs tank is rather rare scenario. Sometimes its even hard to tell what should get true credits for destroyed tank when its crew left it right after getting first hit or beeing immobilized by mine.

there is something like temporary losses in armour equipment. Its when tank is uselees not because was blown up, but becouse it was taken out of the fight. It could mean that it lost tracks, all its visors were shot off, electrical system cought fire, hydraulic system does not work only from the kinetic force of projectile impact with the armor and many other little shits that make tank maybe still in one piece, but towing and repairs are required. And only if we can recover it under enemy fire at all. This tank will be in fight again in mounth or two, but still it was taken out of the fight and was temporary lost. An such little things are true killers of armor potential in any war. Because they happen much more often than spectacular ammunition explosions and flying turrets. After the war popular science sources do not mention these statistics at all because it requires an explanation of how the war looks in detail, and in fact its individual sections. Artillery and mines, are the biggest and most effective enemy of tanks. And we see it even right now in Ukraine.

well good example, since the Panther tank was specifically weak to artillery attacks and airstrikes because of its 16mm thin top armor, which was even thinner than Sherman top armor - thus it was even below armor thickness for some light - medium tanks.

Just because the tank image pops up when you artillery a tank doesn’t mean you actually hit it. You must get a direct hit on the roof or it will do nothing.

I remember my Tiger was isntakilled with sigle hit prefire of artillery in Normandy few months back.
Worst luck I have ever had ingame.

So artillery can destroy pretty much any tank. But it really depends on luck and it isn’t consistent.

But to the enemy artillery that the text mentions, it can refer to AT artillery. So…

Artillery CAN destroy tanks, light tanks more easily - like panzer 2s, A13s, T-60…
But any tank can be blown up by artillery shell, if it hits it in the right place, which is kind of rare.
Usually, the artillery called in by radio operators tends to do no or little damage to them like, tracks, optics and other possibly exposed objects tend to get yellow from the simulated shrapnel/explosive force nearby.

Overall, when playing as a heavier vehicle (KV-1 or Tiger…) you usually can shrug it off like nothing happened, but it would be better to stay out of the red circle anyway.
