Whenever you join a match in progress, it always seems that either the point is getting captured by the attackers, or is already heavily fortified. It would be nice if there was a setting to disable “Join match in progress,” like they have in War Thunder.
Increase desertion penalties drastically for people who desert partway into the match and this issue would tighten up.
I get that for as long as the map preference system 100% definitely doesn’t do anything at all tons of people will desert as soon as the game type/map is chosen. The real problem is the people who play 2-3 minutes and then desert because they’re losing.
The amount of absolute roflstomps I’ve ended up actually winning in the late stages is probably only just below 50%, so why not stay the course? When you desert 3 minutes in you’re just f***ing your team.
Alternatively, as some have suggested here already, give bonuses to those who join a game in progress, including but not limited to: not losing a rank point for a loss. 1.2x rewards for a loss. Battle score given at the time of joining equal to the #4 player to give a headstart (only awarded if you complete the match).
That would actually be a great idea! I haven’t seen anyone say that, but it could be similar to the “join any army” button. It could be a “join match in progress” and give a bonus reward IF they stay the whole time.
That definitely screws up my team a lot as I will be playing, some players join mid match, and then just leave. 
. It seems to always end up as an unbalanced match due to little Timmy getting mad he got sniped by a FG 42 II.

Yeah, somehow i was outplayed by a bot in that one lol.
I’ve been playing a lot of solo customs lately and finish with about 3x the points of the best bot, so not sure how i was 2nd fiddle to a bot in this one, but it is what it is😂. Might have been one where i was chasing event tasks instead of playing properly.
For some reason, it only happens when I’m playing solo. When I have my friend with me, almost no one joins mid-match, and no one leaves mid-match. IDK what he paid Gaijin.
I agree with this. I made this as a suggestion last month myself.
