The real solution is to have your teammates cover the tank as they advance. The 'commander out of the cupola should have a stance where he’s just peering over the lip instead of the parade stance there is now.

Or just don’t be surprised that pushing past your infantry ends in getting TNT and molotovs thrown at you.
