Yesterday, I finally got my best friend to try Enlisted.
I thought I’d share a funny story about our FPS friendship.
Back when “Daddy Mac would make us; Jump, Jump” we walked into a computer store, and were offered a free game called Doom. It was a new concept called Shareware, and not only did we get a free & amazing game, we got the floppy disk it came on!
The game was pure Ethereum and when we got Doom2 and 14.4 baud modems, we set up a 1v1 match (PC to PC over the phone line).
Rules were simple: “The first one to kill the other player 10 times AND successfully escape via the teleporter on the map - wins”.
Well he got the jump on me and got to 10 kills first. But I had an ace up my sleeve. I decided to head him off at the pass, and ran for the teleporter room to cut off his escape.
The teleporter room door opened, and standing there in the door was Doom Guy “my friend”. He hit me with the double-barrel and my screen went entirely red. He blew my wig clean off, when all he had to do was walk to the teleporter behind him and escape to win…he waited for me to kill me an 11th time.
We’ve lived through campaigns of Operation Flashpoint, Arma, many COD games, including our favorite: “World at War”. I convinced him that not only does Enlisted honour historical weapon accuracy, but the events often give us access to rare weapons.
I showed him the recent D-Day event reward, the FA Shwartz Colt pistol. My man went and dug up an article from the '80s about that pistol to share with me. We’re both gun enthusiasts, and fell in love with the BAR & Garand during SPRyan. That makes Enlisted special to me, and hopefully him too.
It was a hard sell, since we spent so much time in BOps I & II earning gear only for the servers to shut down. Having played Warframe for 14 years, I convinced him that free-to-play with monetization is the way to go now.
Anyway, we online. Ryben, Mellish, Wade? Hope to see you all on the beaches of Normandy soon.
