I had a XP booster, joined a random fun custom lobby, left it, and the booster was wasted for the 10 XP?
We always could use boosters on customs.

They count as a match too. And boaters do get activated if one leave a match. Either customs or normal match. With, or without xp gain.

The booster will be used only if you meet certain conditions that are specified in the description for every custom room, like here:
In short, there must be minimum 10 players (5 of them scoring minimum 500 points) in custom battle at some point, it doesn’t have to be 10 players at one time playing against each other. If you join some custom room with 6 players, but additional 4 players left this battle earlier (deserted) it still counts as 10 players and this will make your XP booster used, even if you join so late as for last few seconds, so there’s the risk involved when joining custom room with a booster.
