Tommy, Okinawa, was responsible for having the largest amphibious invasion in the entire war. Ironically enough, it was dead silent when the Marines were on the beach. There was no contact until they were further inland, where the Japanese had built their famous tunnel systems. It was pretty much an all-inland fight.
