Why does it seem like only 30mm and above work on planes?

Whenever I play the BF 110 it seems like whenever I hit planes with the 30mm and 37mm they hurt. They go down fast. But if I throw 200, 20mm into a plane with a 109 they keep flying like nothing is happening.

The plane damage model actually dont work correctly most of the cas absorb the bullet

The problem trully exists and I’m surprised that it haven’t been yet fixed. They have almost ready damage model from War Thunder, why does it last this long?

The P 51 guns just tickle aircraft at times, combined with the poor flight model it’s hard work at times

Yeah the 110’s guns are the best in the game - fortunately the plane is not very maneuverable so they don’t get used very often!

Smaller caliber guns do kill - but often it is a battle of attrition - the damage model os pretty borked as has been mentioned.

Same thing for IL 2.

All versions with 20mm cannon just tickle and seems to be unable to even shoot other planes down, it will make them smoke but that dont even effect their flight model any way.

37mm cannon instead send other planes towards ground and does it fast.

The P-51 makes me so irritated, at times. It’s truly the worst aircraft in the Normandy campaign. It’s already out-gunned and out-performed by all the other aircraft out there (even a 188 can out-turn it) and the P-51 was one of America’s premiere aircraft during WWII.

There are very few things about which I will openly criticize the developers and ask, “How can you be this dumb?!” but the P-51 and aircraft balance in general is one of them.

PLEASE don’t you get out maneuvered by a Ju188 in a P-51. Just use high yo-yos and immelmanns FFS! The Mustang is supposed to be a high speed fighter, you can’t expect it to be at its best at 250 km/h.

This said, I find it more irritating due to the wobbly FM, making it incredibly difficult to keep guns on target with joystick / controller.

The problem with the P-51 is that in this game, it’s only maneuverable at high-speed. At below ~275 mph, the Mustang will become unresponsive. That makes trying to use combat flaps is an exercise in utility. The only thing it excels at, really, is flying at full WEP – which will turn you into a glider in a hurry, if you’re not careful. It probably sounds like I hate the P-51, which isn’t the case – I regularly shoot down 190’s in it. But she’s a fickle bird.

If we could actually spread out, then the boom-and-zoom tactics she’s obviously made for would work. As it stands, they don’t – usually. But, when they do, it’s beautiful!

We’re in agreement about the wobbly flight mechanics, though. Ugh. I gave up trying to use a controller and just went back to using a mouse, since that’s clearly what the devs intended.

There’s also another factor that, I think, plays a bigger role than we tend to consider… Pilot’s “flight stamina”.

Coming from War Thunder, I initially used to think that pilot’s stamina in this game would work the same way as there: cumulative fatigue progressively decreasing G tolerance.

INSTEAD, after several hours of flight time in game, it appears to work differently (or at least that’s what I figured out, since this is yet another thing the game gives NO explanation whatsoever): besides the obvious loss of control power during blackouts, in plenty of occasions I would find my plane(s) turning at a reduced pace without blacking out, just to suddenly start turning tighter again a a few seconds later (without notice).

In the end, what I think I’ve figured out is that Enlisted manages pilots’ stamina just like soldiers’ one. Regardless of G forces, acting on control surfaces beyond a certain threshold of deflection + airspeed (not sure how much) drains the pilot’s stamina bar, like sprinting. Once the bar is empty, the pilot is “tired” and cannot act on controls at full deflection until recovering, so in the meantime player’s inputs are capped to what appears to be roughly 50-60% of the max value.

never had a issue with my p-51. About aiming. Never aim for the tail of a plane. always the engine or the cockpit. If you are firing at any plane from across the map your wasting bullets on a p-51. Get close and finish em. I went and had 12 down planes in my p-51 the other day.
Sad to say learn your weapon ( plane) before dismissing it.

It can just take a lot of ammo from a P-51 to take down an enemy plane, even when you’re shooting at the engines. Conversely, a quick burst to the belly of a 190 will bring it right down. I’m unfamiliar with that airframe, so I don’t know why. Exposed fueltanks, maybe? All I know is that hunting 190’s is very easy from below.

Also, killing enemy tanks is super easy in a P-51 using boom and zoom tactics. Odd that my 50-cal ammo will penetrate the top of a tank’s hull, when 75mm AP rounds won’t.
