Most influential person in the Soviet weapons industry being Degtyaryov where he tried to convince the military to not drop the SMG since the military wanted automatic rifles more thus stuff like Simonov’s AVS-36 being a thing but Winter War gave them a hard lesson and came up with PPD-40 back in service but its not until the Great Patriotic War that the military allowed to have large numbers of SMGs.
He did design the 12.7mm DK then Shpagin improved it and became the DShK. There’s also the ill-fated DS-39 which would’ve replaced the Maxim if it weren’t for Barbarossa with not enough time to fix the problems of the design.
I remember how he tried to design an assault rifle himself but that never saw the light of day as he lost to Kalashnikov’s AK.
