Why are heavy caliber cannons useless against tanks?

I was bored this morning so i decided to fly around in training room and test how the heavy calibers guns do against German tanks. Mainly the 40mm premium hurricane and the Yak with 37mm

At an almost 90 degree top down angle these guns are very hit and miss when it comes to killing the engine and starting a fire. All other area seem do absolutely no damage. With 20mm and less of top armor I would think an attack angle at that degree would maximum pen….

They still haven’t finally fixed the issue yet.

I think their ammo is HE only

Meanwhile, British Hispano 20mm mysteriously appears to be AP only when shooting planes (very little damage) but HE only when shooting Pumas on the ground (no damage at all).

Hi, some planes having incorrect penetration is a known bug.

Hello, so presumably that will be fixed soon, this is not the first time Hispanos bugged, they were fixed and lasted one or two updates then they broke again.

In Warthunder, tanks are well rendered when in the air… :pensive:

It’s not even HE ammo because you have to directly hit an infantryman to kill or injure them.
The creators simply wanted to weaken the planes so that they would not easily destroy land machines and spoiled it completely.
