Can they be spotted from Air? If you get high up can you spot them by the puff of smoke? What’s the best way to find an active mortar team?
Try to hear it.
The most reliable option would be to have a friend who will help you and a sheet of paper with pencil and ruler to do this:

Uggh… I was hoping the mortar smoke from going off would give it away somewhat; however, had no success finding them so far with that method.
Unfortunately the sound is the only indicator.

Well; hopefully, this will be in an update in the future. This should be visible in some manner…
You hear hear it and triangulate, as well as spot the firing signature from a vantage point, plane, or the spawn screen.
I’m not sure what to call it, but there’s a pretty nice stream going upwards behind the shell when it fires.

You can see it from the enemy fire? I’ve been looking for something from both the Air and ground; however, haven’t seen it yet. If there is something there I’ll keep trying…
I’ve definitely seen it from the ground multiple times (the one good thing about the towers on provovolvomoscow village is that you can spot mortars with them), and I would assume you can see them from planes, as tank firing signatures render before tanks do from the air.
