What if AI would take cover like in old SP games?

Ofc to balance it you would need to manually command them to take cover and they would still show a bit of the skin to the enemy so enemy could have chance to kill them without flanking.

Imagine if our smoke grenades would be as effective:

Other game that had cool ai was: FEAR

Enlisted could learn a thing or two from those ancient games. I think bots shouldn’t be only a second life for your soldiers but integral part of the PVEPVP sandbox they had in mind when they first theorycrafted about the Enlisted.

Another example: S.T.A.L.K.E.R

Enemy ai is not shying from trying to flank your character, they will use cover, objects around them to move unnoticed and even cover for their friendlies and also use nades to force you to move from your bunkering position. When you take few of them they may even wait for you to move and then shoot you.

yep

The problem is;
Devs are not capable of it.

small team and horrible codding, we all know

Ai still needs to follow you, I don’t think this is an easy task, since those cover animations will actually slow movement down, and AI.is already staying behind regularly.

That’s why i said that they will only go smartly into a cover when you command them.

well you are underestimating complexity of AI programming. in SP it can work cause devs could use numerous tricks to optimize performance against 1 player. in enlisted it becomes extremely complex cause of numerous variables like much bigger map size, complex terrain, changeable variables on terrain(craters, player made trenches, buildable objects, vehicles and their wreckage), numerous players, numerous bots. every time you make bot smarter, server needs to calculate more per each bot which could lead to easily doubling server cost.

there is also question of do they actually want to improve AI cause lots of players perform worse than bots and killing easy bots give people satisfaction.

I dont know who likes bad bots bt at this point its gamebreaking

bad players… do you think most people would even have kills without shit bots around?

I mean, there is a difference between easy but believable AI and simply shit AI.

I dont want them to to shoot more accurate. I want them to COVER themselves rather than standing like mindless chickens. Cod 1 managed this 21 years ago ffs.

Additionally, CoH and MoW managed to create a working dynamic cover for hundreds of bots and both are from mid 2000s.

Sudden Strike 1 from 2000 and Codename panzer phase 1 from 2004 let your troops to enter buildings to take cover and take less damage from enemies…

like i said they used various tricks to achieve reasonable performance for single player game. any change in bot programing that requires more cpu processing might drastically increase requirements for server.

and like i said, problem might not even be technical. bots with no cover = easy kill. considering that we have people who barely get 10 kills while i get 100+ kills, if bots suddenly start covering those people might end up with 1 kill.

I don’t know when it started, but in recent years the COD series has also added a lot of AI in the multiplayer mode of the large map, and has a good behavior model.

Computing performance has never been a problem, the tests more of the technical ability of developers on how to solve the problem.

well like i said, problem might be of technical nature or lack of knowledge or it may be just design decision. cant really say either way without seeing their code and server performance.

also if bots actually searched cover, other bots wouldnt kills so many random bots, nor would players manage to get easy kills either with infantry or with vehicles. most affected by this would be shit players which make considerable part of playerbase.

also cod has AAA studio behind it with lots of talented engineers and decades worth of AI research on numerous games.

Or maybe it’s a simpler issue - devs incompetence. Remember it took them 3 years to fix bipods to semi working state. Bots in Enlisted are still in miserable state years since release of the first alpha test, they have only received a couple of band aids but they still don’t feel believable and alive. They are never a challenge and if you don’t have even a 10% of challenge of a real player you get bored, your immersion breaks and you start seeing the game as just a game and not a cool and authentic experience with intelligent enemies to fight.

I’m not asking for the Fear or Stalker enemies just bots acting like in Cod or Brother in Arms (another example) would be more than fine - just make them sit behind cover, make them show a bit of the skin so you could shoot them anyway and make them shoot from time to time, the more time you are exposed the more dangerous they will be against you (detection for longer = they will get more accurate instead of being instantly aimbotting)

Remember when DF coders said that they have machine learning bots? what a bunch of sad liars and underdelivers

Not really you again not even trying to read my posts and my ideas you just keep posting same thing over and over again. Not only i want ai to show part of the skin so you could kill them while even being under cover but also since they will focus on one area and shooting there they will be much easier to flank or killed by a nade. Tanks can use HE/HEAT so it wouldn’t matter and you could actually get more kills by using MG.

COD1 had devs that were way less experienced that Enlisted devs, remember Enlisted is made by War Thunder ex devs, can we stop acting like they are indie studio that just made their game in a game maker for the first time? Plus in the past making games was way harder than right now, and yet they made a better ai in 2002 than Enlisted in 2024 with a fraction of the dev team, because you don’t know that old AAA games were like current AA games they had tiny studios with only a couple of devs. Most of COD1 devs only worked on 1-2 games before they joined Infinity Ward. A couple of Medal of Honor devs or some crappy games that nobody remembers.

Then just increase the combat efficiency of the AI. Imagine that the player no longer makes 95% of the kills in squad, but more like a real squad leader: Finding suitable combat locations for the squad and deciding when and how to attack. Thus shit players and their squad in cover can also bring a head-on blow to enemies who attack recklessly.
