It has no reason to exist except to make the grind longer.
It’s boring, tedious and unenjoyable. It’s use is basically click and forget without a second thought.
It’s easily the 2nd worst economy related feature after the campaign tree line.

I know it’s not the most important thing right now but I’ve just realised nobody ever said sth like this.
It exists so that vets with more bronze orders can stomp casual players even more effortlessly…
… Which uh… isn’t a good thing
They need to increase the drop rate of orders significantly, its outrageous right now.
Yes, but the system will still remain bad and boring as fuck. It needs an overhaul imo.
I seriously doubt the devs will ever do it though sadly, all about the cash grabs.
When the academy removal update came, they boosted the bronze soldier drop rates, making it 200%.
That was fine.
They never boosted the bronze weapon drop rate after the weapon “lotery” update… it’s pricy as can be, and probably an incentive to buy those new p2w “premium” squads.
Both bronze soldier and weapon rates are insanely low still. Takes forever to get anything
Like I’ve been saying, every economy update has made the system worse and more predatory
Its not even close to soldier upgrade and level system.
Trying to get the right perks for a soldier is fucking agonizing. It needs a total overhaul
Well, soldier perks make some sense at least. You have to chose what perks you want to have and what you can have. There is a minimum effort required to this.
In case of weapon upgrades it’s “close your eyes and press upgrade”.
If a game feature can be effectivelly used by a basic macro, it needs a change.
Maybe not an overhaul but some changes would be nice.
Still too RNG like.
When I upgrade guns, I get my upgrade and dont need to reinvest time or maybe even gold to get my perks I actually want.
Its still better than than what existed. The ‘Rolling for Loot’ mechanism before is why I have 130+ Grenatwurfer 36’s and close to 200 Flamethrowers.
That kind of randomization of breaking down for Weapon Parts, then upgrading was very tedious and not streamlined at all.
No different than the Acedemy IMO.
Could they Rework it? Sure, but the bigger question is how. Without making it even harder on the casual or F2P Player.
Ya, the old weapon upgrading system was so astonishingly awful. Truly some nightmare material
Personally I think it could just do with some QoL changes.
Bottom line really is that it brought you from having no gear to a hodgepodge of gear quickly, and the grind was in getting exactly what you wanted.
In the current system the grind is in getting anything period.
The current system as well has a problem in that a lot of “low tier” gear is irrelevant since by the time you get the silver to buy it you already unlocked a higher tier replacement.
So, gacha aside, the solutions would either be
A. Break the costs down to be more flexible. ie, instead of getting 1 silver a battle you get 10, and instead of costing 1/10 silver an MP 28 costs 0.5/5
B. Take the historical route and make it so low tier guns have pros and cons over higher tiers so it’s true horizontal progression
Yeah but that part was a broken system still in my eyes. Regardless of the hodgepodge, it was a very stacked RNG system. On stream, I got 9 Mortars, 10 98Ks, ect ect ect. It was over 40 Bronze I think till I got ONE gun that I had just unlocked. And then to calculate how many guns to break down in order go fully upgrade that ONE gun. Mathematically it was the purest form of filler / afterthought content the game had.
When they changed the system, both myself and a Friend I play with logged in to just chat over comms while we spent close to 8 hours breaking down all the weapons we had in the new system (with the obvious exception of the now useless 120 Mortars just in one campaign and I play them all both sides ).
All that said. It is one of the few aspects of the game I don’t really have an opinion on , with how to improve it, because in all the games I worked on, they’ve never had a system really equivalent to it.
I can theory craft some ideas, but I would be more of a detriment than help.
As for your suggestion, sure they could try that. Though I personally would say that even the older guns are still relevant in the game. I find they actually are better at times then their later upgrades on many fronts. I.e. I prefer using the G43 at longer range than the FG42. I also think in Berlin the Ratio of G43’s to FG42’s is 3 to 1 now? Maybe more, maybe less.
When the BA Buff happened I reduced even more the amount of those guns.
So I still think the older stuff (with some exceptions, you can’t pay me to use a MP28 / OVP) matters in the game. Min / Maxing is not my cup of tea really. And they older stuff can be used to compete now that a lot of things are back to normality.
All that said however. As much as this could use some updating, I would rather they spend time and resources on longer standing problems.

Map Balance Adjustments
New Maps for stagnating Campaigns
Bigger Maps (Pacific has spoiled me because I can do SO much more flanking than a typical, say, Berlin Map, where the ingress points are memorized).
I would say get rid of being able to upgrade weapons at all, where each weapon of the same type works the same. And when you buy a new soldier, you get the most recent weapon you have unlocked for their class automatically equipped. You could still buy weapons, but it wouldn’t be as many as it is now, and I would make it cheaper.
