Veteran from (((a similar competing game))) 100 hours in - Detailed feedback

Greetings! I’ve been enjoying this game recently. As a person who’s spent 1000s of hours in 1945, I feel I might have some feedback on the current format.

First, I briefly wanna mention some great pros of the game;

  • High damage on all weapons. There is nothing worse than using a bolt action rifle which does not OHKO your target consistently, at least when shooting center mass. This game does not have that problem… Yet? Nice.

  • Loads of variation in gameplay styles and equipment. I have no problem finding something new to do or work on.

  • Shooting lots of enemies feels good. The squad gamemode is fairly novel for the genre, and it’s awesome fun. The firefights are intense, and swapping between squad members could feel much worse than it does. Wouldn’t get this experience anywhere else!

And here are the cons, according to me:

  • The bomb spam. As many have mentioned already, it is bad. People unlocking mortars and planes will just compound the issue over time; It’s not just artillery (although that is the worst one - less than a minute cooldown, really?). Unless fixed, it will create a situation where veteran players make the game increasingly unbearable for themselves and others. As it is now, I spend like half every game with a blurred out screen… If I have the perk.

  • The only real counter to planes is planes. The AA guns are close to working, but they feel too slow. It’s not that pilots win matches either, the meta counter is to ignore them and hold points. Skilled pilots consistently get #1 while losing the matches. I would assume the biggest killer of planes is the intentional kamikaze crash. Some tweaking to AA would go a long way imo, to allow counterplay.

  • The bots are tarded. I believe this is a work in progress, and I would hope so - Having them clump together makes them liable to die meekly in a single long-range explosion (of which there are a lot), or alternatively, getting stabbed one after the other by some guy who ran out of ammo. I think they could be a bit stronger without ruining anyone’s power fantasy. They are surprisingly decent at assaulting/defending points though, compared with their ability to follow or stay. We need more commands for them as well!

  • The melee is tarded. Being able to spam click a knife and erasing a whole squad while zigzagging through them is a bit unseemly for such an otherwise detailed game. I don’t mind the knife being an OHKO, but I some kind of .5s kill animation would probably be appropriate.

  • Small thing, but the upgrade system feels bad. At least let me know how many tank parts I get, before asking me to throw away my hard earned orders. There is no reason to have every number be a gamble, & tooltips are lacking in general. Well, besides the weapon/vehicle stats which are great. Why not just have me pay X silver orders for Y tank upgrade? That’s basically what I’m doing anyway.

  • Last one, and this is a big one; The vitality perk. Yuck. For the same reason OHKO weapons are good, this is awful. It’s a gamebreaking power spike to allow soldiers this kind of health increase. Shooting a guy with my bolt action feels a lot more bad, than him getting a hit marker (instead of dying) feels good for him. The perk will barely be felt by its user, but opponents will notice, a lot. It is a net negative for the game to have juggernaut soldiers. Delet dis. If I had the option, I would personally rather take a 90%+ reduction in bomb blur. Would feel great for me, while being unnoticeable for opponents.

So anyway, that’s my 2cents. Hope it’s useful to somebody!

Wall of Text but written with passion and love. +1
I can only agree.

Totally agreed. Sometimes I don’t want to fly but the battle would definitely be lost because there are enemy planes in the air. So if there is no ally flying, I have to.

This is the first time I came to this forum and started posting something. I would like to ask, if not awkwardly, how can I post a new thread here?

Thank you for the post. Agree 100%

Nailed it.
I think the wording would be more accurate if we change the “tarded” with “retarded”, for now. I could be meaner than this, but I love this game and I want it to be better.

Thanks for the kind replies! A quick update, to address the patch that dropped right as I posted this… And I’ll throw in some extra stuff as well

  • Arty seems fixed, it’s much more bearable now. The “drawback” as it were, seems to be that the spawncamper faction has moved on to flying bomber planes. Some people are extremely averse to dying, as their minds have been corrupted with KDA statistics from other games. Planes still need a fix, and i fear the day when people learn to use mortars properly.

  • Vitality perk was nerfed by 10%. Seems rather insignificant. I personally want the perk dead and gone. It still does the same thing it did before, mainly survive bolt action hits at close to medium range.

  • Tooltips got better, but I would still like to know costs and stats on gear I haven’t unlocked yet. As the game is now, most early purchases are essentially traps. The linear progression on most gear is something I didn’t address, but I dislike it very much in principle.

  • The linear progression sux, and the weapon options don’t make sense. I’ve been playing Russians in the Moscow campaign; We have access to three bolt action rifles early, which are almost identical. Investing in any of these is a footbullet. You will get plenty while you scrounge for other weapons with your bronze orders, but your bronze orders cannot provide high tier equipment until you have it unlocked.

  • Crafting system is bad. Because of aforementioned problems with obtaining high tier equipment, upgrading it more than a level or two is not feasible in a reasonable time. It appears there’s even a “chance of failure” modifier stuck at 100%, which I would hate to see fully implemented. There are much better ways to create currency sinks, that do not feel as ripoffy. Training the skillpoints for efficiency also feels like a chore, but that’s a lesser evil - Although it does add to the “trap” feel of the entire system. The “best” upgrade on every item is stuck on the last upgrade level - If we were allowed to choose which modification to make, it would be far more bearable, as it would create a reasonable payoff for unlocking something early - Instead of grinding mongsquads in poopygear permanently, in order to power up favorite squads that we never get to use.

How to post here? Ehh… This is my only thread, don’t remember what I did. I think I went to the “suggestions” subforum of english speaking section, and clicked the “Open Draft” thing?

You can feel lucky that you didn’t see how it worked during CBT.
That modifier was around 50% on the high upgrade levels (might be even lower on the highest, but I don’t remember). There were also no silver orders, so we had to have enough luck to get through 3 awful stages of RNG:
-get a desired weapon from the bronze order (they were always on the lowest level, not like now, when you cen get fully upgraded weapon from there
-get as much parts as possible from it
-pray that all those parts (over 100 on the highest levels) will not go into the trash because of random failure chance

Yeah, that sounds like pulling teeth. I get that there needs to be an incentive to use the RMT system, but… I don’t think asking people to pay real money to maybe get a return, is a particularly good one. I’m feeling mixed about the RMT-only content as well, though it doesn’t seem particularly overpowered. I would like to see it contained to membership, regular unlocks, and cosmetics… But that’s probably too much to ask

I think a lot of the problems come from the size of the cards. Artillery, mortars, planes, etc. would have less impact if the maps were larger. Gajin wants to make everything that makes up a battlefield available, but on small maps. So difficult to not TK on plane or with keystrokes, easy to be spam by arty or those same planes.

Larger maps are needed, even if it means adding APCs to spawn or otherwise.

So we could add an airfield for planes to reload / repair and increase the time between attacks.

Yeah that would be awesome. I noticed a lot of the maps seem to be parts of a larger battlescape, many of them are connected at the edges… So maybe it’s planned for the future? Larger maps would definitely alleviate some of the problems.
