I made a post a few months ago about having mechanised infantry squads. I have refined this idea further, and I think it will benefit the game.
I believe you should be able to incorporate vehicles into any squad. They should rely on a bronze, silver, gold system like with weapons or personnel. For example, bronze vehicle tokens would upgrade your vehicles, silver tokens would get you vehicles, and gold tokens would get you vehicles with skins, like with tanks.
Here’s my proposition:
• 1 vehicle slot per squad.
• 1 silver vehicle token would get you a Jeep or its German variant respectively; it would carry the first four members of your squad and would have the same camouflage options as the tanks and AFVs
• 2 silver vehicle tokens would get you an amphibious Jeep or its German variant respectively; it would carry the first four members of your squad and would have the same camouflage options as the tanks and AFVs
• 5 silver vehicle tokens would get you a truck to transport your entire squad and it would have the same camouflage options as tanks and AFVs
• 20 silver tokens would get you a half-tracked APC (for the US forces, the M3 half-track, and for the German forces, the Sd.Kfz.251 half-track). This vehicle would transport your entire squad and give it protection on the way to battle. It would be equipped with an M2HB Browning or MG42 respectively and would have the same camouflage options as tanks and AFVs. Cost is so high to restrict flow of APCs and encourage use of faster, non-armoured vehicles.
I like the idea, especially being able to have jeeps and kubelwagen. Not sure about armored vehicles tho.
something like spawn next to your vehicle and use it if you want
Great idea! Though the concern would be that snipers have troubles killing infantry. But it counters AA killing infantry and gives tools more use.
I think it would also change how tanks need to positions themselves for maximum kills. Maybe allow personal weapons while in the truck?
What squads can and can’t have this, cuz some squad wouldn’t use these at all.
Yeah, it would change the offensive paradigm completely, from one based on light infantry moving at only a pace they can go, to being able to go much quicker. This would inevitably make the game more fast-paced because you’d then have vehicles carrying full motorised rifle squads instead of a slow drag, especially on D-Day as the Allies.
As for AA killing infantry, if this is introduced it could solve some of the problems because the battle would’ve most likely pushed through before the engineer could put down the AA gun, completely eliminating the problem.
As for snipers, they’d probably be the new biggest threat to motorised infantry. With this, I would assume Gaijin would allow infantry to fire out of the vehicle (minus maybe the half-tracked APCs because that’d defeat the point of them) however snipers could still sit on top of a hill and pick off infantry in trucks or cars quite easily.
nah to silver orders for vehicle. i would just lock it behind grind (aka levels).
also no to idea for 1 vehicle slot per squad. you would at least need specialized squad like riders. if you give vehicles to every squad you would get absolute spam on map and even worse clutter.
I see your concern about the armoured vehicles, but I do not believe it’s a massive problem, because it would only carry a machine gun and its detachment of infantry. APCs are designed to ferry soldiers around the battlefield while giving protection against small arms fire and fragmentation that would kill the crew of a non-armoured truck or car, and the machine gun is only there to defend the vehicle on the way to the battlefield. There would still be big incentives for using light infantry with no vehicles: the ability to use rally points (imagine trying to spawn a truck in a 2nd floor window lol), the ability to get to places where vehicles would not, and the ability to sneak behind motorised units and blow them up with a Panzerfaust or Bazooka or whatever else.
I see your point regarding silver vehicle tokens, and I agree there should be a grind to acquire them. I also believe the vehicles should be locked behind levels before you can acquire them.
As for “clutter”, these vehicles have major flaws that would encourage players to stick to light infantry on foot. For starters these vehicles would be incredibly vulnerable to explosives (that’s why the armoured vehicles should be priced higher, but even they would experience the problem). Explosion packs, anti-tank mines, grenade launchers, bazookas, even a regular rifle bullet in the right place would be a huge threat to any of these vehicles.
Secondly, motorised infantry squads wouldn’t be able to use rally points close to the frontline. Imagine trying to spawn a truck in a 2nd floor window. This would be a big disincentive to using them.
Thirdly you can access more areas while on foot than vehicles. You can move through alleyways, buildings, trenches, and other tight areas on foot where you just couldn’t in a vehicle.
Lastly in urban areas they just aren’t up to the task. Someone with a rifle, machine gun, or even pistol could kill your entire squad if you drive past someone on a top floor window. There are more areas for the enemy to ambush you and your vehicle in urban areas, and on every vehicle (minus the armoured APCs, but that’s why they’re so expensive versus the other vehicles), you’re prone to ambush on any map.
just cause DF loves their “historical accuracy”, doesnt mean we need to adopt their standards… at least jumbo is game balance for tigers and panthers and can be get in mid grind, otherwise allies would really have no chance in normandy.
I see your point about the Allies not having a chance in Normandy, and to an extent I agree. However, there is currently a large power gap between the US and Germans. The US forces have better armoured vehicles (the Jumbo tank, Sherman, M10) and a better aircraft (P-47) whereas the Germans have better infantry weapons (FG42 (both versions), MG34/42/34 with Patronentrommel 34 magazine, G43, MP43/1, MP40). To add some equal vehicles to the game would balance the fights out more because it would matter less on your side’s quantitative superiority than your side’s qualitative superiority. The primary purpose of the vehicles isn’t to use them as light tanks or gun carriers, they’re there to get troops to the battle quickly.
Also, we don’t “need” to adopt “their standards” of “historical accuracy”. No-one will force you to use vehicles in your squads, in the exact same way that no-one has forced, is forcing, not will force you to use M2 Carbines, Jumbo tanks, StG-44 assault rifles, large numbers of FG-42s, Italian weapons, Sten MkIIs, or BAR A1.
germans have better armored vehicles… tiger and panther destroy everything (only jumbo is giving some problems) while being practically immune frontally. only m10 and m4a1 76w can penetrate them, while m10 and m4a1 76w are more prone to damage from other tanks. btw m10 is also shit cause of exposed commander which infantry can snipe.
Devs seems cant edit level campaigns because after changes we will got many clones.
(I just think, dont know and not sure).
But yeah… Put them to levels is better.
and will make every squad motorized infantry… for some campaigns motorized infantry really doesnt even fit considering that maps are simply too small, objectives are close to one another and they would just create unnecessary spam of leftover/destroyed vehicles. sometimes even destroyed tanks can clutter maps and now imagine every squad having vehicle…
That is why we should add some limit.
Like… Only 1 infantry Squad on you slot can have vehicle or 2 aquads, but vehicle depends on type. In second variation I mean something like it: one Squad can have APC, but another one can only bike or both can have jeeps (only if player unlocks APC).
Well… I think that they can add level grind by adding these trucks as item in shop:
5 lvl: unlock bike in shop.
10 lvl: unlock jeeps.
15 lvl: unlock trucks.
20 lvl: unlock upgrade (machinegun) feature for vehicles.
30 lvl: unlock APC.
40 lvl or later: unlock flak and anti tank armored trucks.
I do see your point regarding putting a limit on how many active squads can use vehicles. However, it’s important to note that on some maps (Omer, Ruins of Vaux, etc.) it would be worse to use a vehicle than to just go on foot. With vehicles you would also need to spawn at the back of the map (where tanks spawn) and drive to the frontline, which on some vehicles (the APC, I have the German Pz.W.42 rocket artillery truck and that’s based off the Sd.Kfz.251 APC, it’s painfully slow) would take longer than a light infantry squad spawning at a rally point. I think people (in general) will end up with one squad with a vehicle and the others dismounted. You don’t need to put restrictions on it if it’s just a bad way of playing, people will do it by themselves.
I like the idea of putting bikes in, that went completely over my head, that’d be fun. It’s a shame it was only Tunisia who got them. Not sure about the idea of flak and anti-tank armoured trucks, that’s getting into the realm of actual tanks, not something you’d find in an infantry squad. And I like the idea of adding a machine gun upgrade for the vehicle. They’d probably be priced at around 3 silver weapon tokens for it, as the unmounted MG42 is also 3 silver weapon tokens. I previously thought that the APCs would just come with a machine gun and the others wouldn’t but I prefer this idea instead.
