Uniforms, apparel and insignia

I love the game, I’ve played it for 90 hours so far but as a reenactor I’ve noticed some things that don’t fit and could be changed. I got some ideas that may interest the developers too. It’s nothing revolutionary but…

Let me start with some inaccuracies before I get to the ideas that came to my mind.
Since Gajin is known for developing their models as realistic as possible, even to the point of information leaks from various… governoment sources, I hope that what I point out will be at least taken into consideration.

I will be speaking from german military perspective as it’s the topic that I feel confident in due to years of reenactment and learning history.

  1. German medics on eastern front didn’t wear red crosses, especially not on their helmets as Soviets didn’t respect the convention which protected medics, which is totally understandable since they didn’t sign it. Those crosses were more dangerous in that theather than helpful. Let’s omit the topic of the armament used by medics, since for gameplay reasons changes here are not necessary. For courious people - on western front, medics were prohibited from taking part in combat actively, they carried pistols only for personal protection and protection of casualties “just in case”. On eastern front however, they could be seen with anything and everything.

  2. Erbsentarn or “pea dot” camouflage was used by the Waffen SS only, so Wehrmacht “Litzen” - collar patches are inaccurate, and what is more, there was no collar patches on those particular uniforms, not wh patches, not WSS patches.

  3. Minor gear - machinegunners carried a pistol and mg maintenence kit on them, since I’ve seen various belt attachment configurations in cosmetics option, it may be important to notice how different classes of soldiers were equipped. Medics again, on the other hand, wore two leather pouches with medical stuff such as medicines, Abschnurrbinde, bandages etc.

  4. The insignia on helmets and caps are… odd. While some caps have wehrmacht eagle obviously without swastika in it’s claws, it has a circle, which is fine and aesthetic, while some other caps have empty space which looks just bad. The eagle without swastika would be a great touch for the rest of them, especially officer hat which looks as if it was too big due to the said empty space.
    Uniforms also lack insignia.

  5. some uniforms and helmets are in wrong colour shade and believe me, it’s important for the accuracy. Uniform models varied in colours, even in the same uniform model or grouping, but all in all those werent colours as saturated as those in the game.

Speaking of suggestions:

  1. I find the helmets a bit boring. There were many variations of German helmet in colours and shapes.
The difference between m40 and m42 were minor and between m40 and 35 even less so, but…
There were helmets painted by soldiers. You can see them painted in famous tricolour camo, two colour camo etc. The lack of insignia on them is fine since the insignia were removed in the later war.

  2. I would be really happy for being able to customize some of my troops to wear different branches uniforms - navy, ground luftwaffe forces (we even have those models already! Fallschirmjager uniform groupings, although they appear randomly and we can’t buy them), maybe even SS. The same goes for other factions. Especially since some of those models already are in the game.

For now this is all I can think of. I will be glad to elaborate on any of those points further when I have time if anyone would be interested.
I would also be very happy if other reenactors, historians and people interested this topic would speak their mind and share their knowledge.

Thank you for reading.

I’ve got huge respect for reenacting, also considered partaking myself. Slight problem is, the Swedish reenactment scene basicly doesn’t exist, so I’d have to travel to Germany for any events, which is hard to justify to my wallet when the hobby itself is already not that cheap. It would also mean brushing up my German, which I haven’t used in a spoken context for half a decade now (I do read from time to time).

Instead, I’m stuck in the LARPing scene, where you can get away with sewing the clothes yourself (much much cheaper than buying authentic uniforms and gear).

Now, as for the suggestion itself, I approve of all suggested changes.

What can I say? It’s fun. You just have to find a good reenactment group/association and the rest is… history  . Apart from experiencing history, you can have a great deal of possibilities to learn it in detail.
Go for it, but that’s a digression I guess.

There are groups and associations that take part in reenactment. In fact, “lone reenactors” just don’t really exist in ww2 reenactment world. There are some but not many. A good group would lend you some stuff until you gather the full kit on your own. Sometimes it takes a year or two.
I suppose you’d be welcome in Poland as well, we have many events and it’s probably as hard as travelling to Germany from Sweden.

Again, we digress though. I’m very happy that you replied, you can always dm me about reenactment, but I want to keep this thread about suggestions. I really want devs to notice it.
