So i am a strategy gamer who liked the idea of commanding a squad and managing teams of squads but omg am i bad at FPS and my squad who i have invested all my 4 levels of xp into cant hit a barn door at 5 paces .and i just dont get how some guys are ending matches with rambo kill counts when i can barely get into double figures , so the question is will my squad get better or am best quitting the game now before i have invested anything into it . the game attracted me because i imagined training a squad into and awesome force but its seems to me this is just like any other FPS with a hero rambo
The game is an FPS at the core. Squad management and upgrades are present, but you’re supposed to do most of the shooting work. AI teammates, at least at their current stage, won’t score most of the kills for you, they’re mainly there for support and as “extra lives” or to provide the squad with special class abilities (see engineers or radio arty).
i will check back on the game in a couple of months see if the squad managment aspect gets any love , thx for the reply FPS really is not my thing
This is my first FPS too - played strategy for decades - you get used to it if you like it enough to keep going
If you are a mediocre shot (like me), you can still be helpful to the team by playing support roles. In example, engineers are super useful in this game as they can set up frontline respawn points (these alone can turn the tides of a match), ammo supply crates, barricades and stationary weapon emplacements.
This posts made me curious on how good inf is without me helping them. I have killed one tank(4kills) in this game because I could not sit by see it murder my teammates for any longer. Other than that that I have sat in the spawn and pressed X on a cap point that we did not hold.
I think you can make some great inf squads in this game and play it as a RTS fine if that is your thing.
Tbh your probably better trying few more times then quitting its a fps at heart with squad game play
This could use some additional details. Squad composition, soldiers level, weapons equipped, map and mode?
Oh sure was more an example of what is possible but can give some more details.
5 man Lmg squad, 3 BAR 5 star. 2 engi 4 star with M2 4 star
5 man Assault squad, 4 5 star assault with Thompson + engi 5 star with M2
6 man Assault squad, 2 5 star 2 4 star with Thompson + engi 4 star with M2 + mg 5 star with BAR
4 man Flamethrower squad (leveling) 2 3 star flamers with Garand + 2 5 star troopers with Garand
3 man Sniper squad (leveling) 2 4 star snipers with Garand + 1 engineer with Lee Enfield.
Weapons: 2 max lvl BAR2 2 max lvl Tompson. Garands and Lee are max. rest is 1 or 2 off from max.
Conquest on Château du Bosq
I spawned under B at the A side of the map. I send all units diagonal across the field towards C. When we where holding C for a while (+/- 1 min+) I send them across towards B and that usually was it they died. If the last guy in the squad was me I would suicide and spawn a new squad. I have been standing still in the spawn except once when I chugged a bomb at a spawn camping tank underneath B.
I spawned all units once in order and the mg squad a 2nd time and then the match was over.
If you could actually make the squad stay put and go prone the game may be epic but they instead constantly run all over the place up and down stairs through barbed wire back and forth through it they do not stay in trenches maybe the answer is to have a further distance we can be from them.
Thanks for the insight. From your lineup, though, I suspect that a relevant role in your AI’s effectiveness was played by them being top-ranked soldiers (and, to a lesser extent, having high-level upgraded weapons). Most players, including myself and the OP, will take A LOT of time to get there.
(Also, I think you’ve been quite lucky, as a single enemy tank covering the central field would have regularly mowed your men down.)
Nonetheless, you’re not the first one I read stating that bots get some kind of “awareness boost” when actively ordered to do something, rather than just following you around.
Now I’m curious about repeating your experiment, but with early-mid game squads and equipment (3 star soldiers, 2-3stars bolt action or semi-auto).
I did a test last week with mid level wpns/soldiers and my performace was better than expected and I didnt fire a shot.
Ultimately though this is a fps with the player controlled soldier being the hero. I dont thinm this game would be very satisfying trying to play it like a Strategy game.
For sure, will take a while to get there. Its nice to know that it is a playstyle that is possible though. With the end game stuff I managed to rank as first but I recon that with some mid tier weapons you would not do that much worse. I recall that when I was halfway my US campaign that my bots made around 30-40% of my kills which during invasion would be around 40-45 kills and for conquest that would be around 20-30 kills average. I also played German campaign first and I never used commands and I never noticed my bots getting any noticable kills at all.
When they are on an attack move they dont do the regular: Boss I spotted a enemy puppy routine before they start shooting. They just open up during the spotting vocals. Also noted that when you have them on X attack move and they take a point they spread out evenly trough the objective and actively sit behind cover. If by the luck of the draw the enemies cross their face they shoot, however if the enemy comes from the rear thats not happening.
No then they will just be used as extra lives and it would take away from the large engagements.
If you use the X move on an objective they already look for cover and the range is unlimited. Its what you are asking for except no chance to hide them since they are at hot spots where they should. You can use it in conquest on one of the back objectives so they dont get murdered straight away.
Yesterday I somewhat made a few tests with my AI, the results didn’t seem particularly encouraging, but I guess that it may also depend on how AI handles specific maps and locations.
While attacking with USA on airfield, with medium level gunners squad, I ordered bots to charge the bunker, but admittedly that’s a hard objective, in fact they were wiped out without doing much.
Then, while defending with Germany on D-day (little more than basic squads, average 2 stars) I tried to order bots to hold objectives while I covered from further back with MGs:
-
When ordered to hold the first bunker on the beach, they took a considerable amount of time wandering around before even figuring out how to get there. Eventually they did enter the bunker, but then just kept standing in an inner room, being of no help until US forces were already overrunning the point.
-
When defending artillery emplacement (2nd cap), they straight up made me facepalm when I saw that their idea of “holding the point” was laying prone in the middle of an open yard, facing nothing but the surrounding stone wall.
No significant test with further caps, since in that match USA failed to push further than the 3rd cap.
