Total AI Rework

The AI in this game is abysmal. It is probably the MOST frustrating aspect of this game. You can see it in every match, for all players. This is a problem, because if it’s getting me (war thunder veteran) mad, I cannot imagine how mad it will get anyone else.
Note, this is not a thread about AI shooting. That’s a whole other can of worms.

The AI rarely sprint with you.
The AI does not understand windows or climbables and will often go miles around or just sit against a wall to get shot.
The AI only follow you sometimes, half the time getting stuck on nothing and just standing around while the enemy plinks at them.
If you don’t mark a point (and sometimes when looking at a point, you actually mark a random wall), they will not get to where you want to go
The AI is extremely erratic, sprinting around in every direction at times making it hard to both hit them as well as to keep them from running around in your face if you stop to take a shot.
Friendly AI will often bump into you and get in your way.
Friendly AI will just run into your tank treads to take damage pointlessly.
The AI will not prioritize safety or buildings. Billions of deaths could be avoided if the AI prioritized getting inside instead of standing outside.
There will be times where one or two AI soldiers will, without any input from you, run in the complete opposite direction or charge towards the enemy. Even when told to sit still I have seen a bot or two run just…somewhere else. I have had matches where a bot was in an area that I didn’t even walk towards and I only found out because I had died and swapped to them.

One of the most diabolical issues with the AI is it’s complete lack of pathfinding ability in certain areas. Areas with debris, such as in Stalingrad, will completely trip up the AI’s pathfinding and cause them to stand around uselessly at the back of a building or do the funny thing where they jump up and around all over the place.
The worst is trenches. The AI has absolutely NO idea what a trench is and will do their level best to stay out in the open outside of the trench so they can get shot than dare step in that trench and stay in it. I cannot count the amount of times I have seen mine, my teammates, and the enemies AI squadmates bob around like lemmings around trench lines. This is actually even worse on the new mountain pass map, as the covered trenches (clearly done by slapping a slab of concrete prop on top) causes them to be even worse at traversing them. They don’t understand that there is a prop in the way.
However, it isn’t just debris and trenches the AI often gets stuck on. It can be any sort of obstacle where they will suddenly get terribly tripped up. I have seen many groups of AI stuck in buildings, on various clutter and other things they have no reason to be so hung up on.

Additionally, the controls for controlling the AI is clunky and simplistic. On the simplistic side, all you can really do is press X on something to get the AI to go somewhere, get them to try to kill a tank (I have never done this and the concept of trusting the AI to use anti-tank weaponry frightens me), or to get an engineer to build or unbuild a constructable.
On the clunky side, anything beyond pressing X requires using the single-troop direction key and it’s quite difficult to use in the extremely fast pace of enlisted gameplay. The game really isn’t the sort of game where you can spend the time to fiddle with it all. And the UI leaves a lot to be desired.

I don’t have solutions for all of these issues, but I think I do have some actual suggestions.
1. An extremely robust re-work of all maps’ AI nodes (For those unaware, AI often follows pre-mapped or procedural generated ‘node-maps’ to direct how and where they should act and go). Marking windows and ledges as climbable, holes in bunkers or doors as prime areas to move into. Finding areas where AI get stuck and adding more directions to them. Really, REALLY detailed nodes around debris and clutter. I believe that the node-maps aren’t nearly as in-depth as they should be for the level of detail in Enlisted’s maps.
2. More ‘smart’ passive AI directives. AI should prioritize cover, getting into buildings (especially when sighting enemy armor or when artillery has been called on their position), and generally acting smarter. I’m no AI maker, but I feel like various flags could be called to do this.
3. More detailed AI control. I feel like the way the AI controls are now are too clunky, too simple, and ultimately too much requiring taking direct control. I think ideas like using the map to tell your squad where to, the ability to use the map to tell your engineers to build what you want. This is edging into RTS territory, but I feel that was initially something Enlisted was always meant to be.
3a. The most out there suggestion is ways to slow down enlisted gameplay so the direction of squads is more effective and important. As it is, Enlisted is an extremely fast paced game where matches can be won or loss by the acts of a couple players in short time. It doesn’t really allow for much strategy.
4. Similar to suggestion 2, but being able to determine how your squads act before going into a match would be nice. Passive/Aggressive is nice but I think being able to go further than that and determine that before getting into a match would really help players figure out how exactly they want their AI to act.

TLDR: I got so mad at my AI please make them better I’m so tired.

I have nothing to add here, ive ranted many a time about the AI, I can only hope the devs will do something, or at the very least, say its in the works, give use something. Hell even a forum mod acting a talking piece could confirm something from their end of things

i have only 1 complain
they give away your position

the rest is what happens when you introduce bots to a game
predictable nuissance

THis one much.
THe general speed of running and sprinting and the Perks bonuses need to be tones down.
Players need to be slowed down, take longer time to sight, run, jump etc, shoot, reload and so on.
Doesn’t have to be too much, but needs to be tones down a notch.
There’s too much wild goose chase in the game.
The game can like you say be won by 2-3 tryhards, chinese goldfarmers w/e in couple minutes, runing here, there fast as the flash, autoaim oneshot left and right pew pew laser.
It is 1. not fun at all. 2 not realistic represenation of WW2 Squad Combat, firefights, Combined Arms etc and 3rd in the end concludes to bad gameplay and just a bad time, noobs don’t stand a chance and frustrating for all
Game could be so much more if jsut was slower paced so was worth it to build with engineers, cycle your Squad soldiers to deal wiht different scenarios.
Game so be much crouch, take up defensive postitions, lay suppressing fire, as a Team resort to strategy, priotitize targets, etc etc

And yeah AI is terrible, and after last update feel like worse again. constantly standing in my view, I’ve had Squad AI block my grenade and molotov throws, putting whole Squad on fire.
They run into building all around front from where enemy fire direction, getting all killed, or just plain running around indicating enemy where I am.
Alos, when inside, they group up same window, blocking fire, and whne enemy spots tank go HE, grenade or whatever and all die. recenlty I’ve had them run sit outside building I’m inside shooting out towards enemy they run out and sit outside window… facepalm

They really need to work on AI, pathfining nodes yeas and the control Squad on Map in Idea I’ve had for long.

Play Hidden & Dangerous, that’s how Squad FPS Should be done, Devs should take a note!

We don’t get any access to premum information as to what the devs want to to do with their game. We’re also bound by an NDA too, so you’re totally out of luck with that request.

man I can’t even begin to how epic this game would be with the amount of action it has now but slower weapon handling and everything tryhards exploit right now, it could be such an epic intense game, something I have yet to find.

I wish to play some mil-sim games but the snail pace really drive me away

Bro the randomly head wiggling the jumping full speed around corners. I used to be a lot sweatier but felt like this game wasn’t really being worked on at the time so I gave up. Playing against sweaty players now is genuinely cancer.

Oh I get that, hence the “acting as a talking piece” part, like if the devs would give the go ahead for an official “leak”. Even then, calling it a “leak” is a stretch tbh.

I mentioned this in another post before: consider the Community Managers as the conduit between devs and players. They’re the ones with the knowledge and access to information. The sterling work that Major McSoon and James does is not only yours, but also our access to the devs intentions, as highlighted in their news articles. Those articles are the real deal, void of speculation and rumour.

We mods are just mere mortals compared to them. We’re just here to keep the forums clean of nonsense and excessive trolling.

Not rarely, they NEVER sprint with you, and they always have to enter a building through a door as opposed to the window you chose which is why they all died at the front door.

I can only hope the devs will do something

maybe the DEV’s are great at modeling, texturing ect. but have no idea how to actually program a game bot? It could be that simple, or, that they don’t think this is an issue worth spending time addressing. Afterall, their is no money in fixing problems, just money in making new stuff the customer will pay for.

I mean if they have no one good at programming bots, that just sounds like its time to hire a new person. Not to mention more people will join as the AI is improved, because I know at least among my friend group, I’ve got some to try the game, but the AI being braindead does tend to be the biggest turn off.

@LokalHero

See the only problem here is, as far as Im aware, I only see the community managers make a new update announcement post, maybe responding once or twice under that same post and thats it. So they dont really feel like the conduit. I see them as the middle man between the mods and the devs personally.

Maybe DF leaves them in the dark and only spoon feed them what they want fed to us.

We cannot always respond to every single suggestion mentioning what is forwarded and what is not for a variety of reasons, unfortunately - at least not yet. It would also create too-urgent expectations, as the developers are constantly busy working on various other important things and may need to put some ideas received from us for the future.

What I can say for sure is that developers are aware of the playerbase’s concerns about AI, and there are always constant improvements to them each update. Now that the game is growing rapidly, there may be more opportunity for them to explore some bigger changes to them on the side from all the key stuff they are working on - we may be able to reveal things in the future. Forum threads and discussions like this do indeed help a lot, though.

Honestly, wasnt expecting you at all, however I’m extremely glad to see you and moreso glad to know the AI issue is heard.

So thank you.

Just to tack on under here, like dont worry, I get you cant respond to everything, but its always just nice to see the “nod” of passed on other just yourself or just interacting in general.

This is my biggest problem with the ai, it is so frustrating to see your ai routinely standing outside of cover all the time. Directly in the line of enemy fire. The ai has no sense of self preservation or situational awareness.

Changes to this would be a major improvement.

I’d like to add here (and I’ll edit the OP) that I have noticed another disturbing action the AI often takes.

There will be times where one or two AI soldiers will, without any input from you, run in the complete opposite direction or charge towards the enemy. Even when told to sit still I have seen a bot or two run just…somewhere else. Today I had a match where a bot was in an area that I didn’t even walk towards and I only found out because I had died and swapped to them.

Infuriating.
