Fun but true fact:
Once in 1943, otto carius’s gunner (tiger 1) managed to shoot down a russian plane using the main gun

the irony of Tiger’s main gun actually being anti air flak

Flack88 killed more tank than plane

It’s not really the gun, but using nothing but a tank ground to ground sight in a complete closed place without all the ranging equipment used for anti-air purpose and managing to do it it’s an hell of an achievement, also considering that it 99% used a normal shell, not a timed HE one

This is the Tiger I ideal angle that optimise the armor front and side.

In normandy is ok, but In berlin is a bit usless do it wen the starter soviet tank have a 8.5cm

It work even in Berlin. Of course less successfully but it’s better than no angle. You only need to survive one shot most of the time to win the duel.

Same could be said with the T-34-85 where the base of the 85mm gun being the M1939 (52-K) AA gun. The IS-2’s D-25T came from an artillery gun though.

Iirc, from what I read about that episode, the Russian plane had been annoying the Tiger by repeatedly strafing it in an attempt to cause any damages, until the crew had enough and decided to shoot back.

This adds plausibility to the story, since in this case the plane lingered around for more than enough time for the tank to organise a reaction, and while pointing straight at the tank it offered an easier target.
