This might be a dumb question, but how many squad formations are there?

When pulling up the formations menu there are two obvious options: wide and standard. But there is the close option which I’m not sure if it means “close the menu” or “close formation”.

Close is close formation
Wide is open formation

You’ll use winde for 95% of the time if you at least want to play this game properly

Not really.
Close formation can cause bots to fire more. I guess it’s because AI is programed in a way: a shot near me → fire at the enemy. And if bots are close together, more of them will have “shot near me” condition triggered by one bullet.
Yes, it turns your squad into a blob but most explosives will wipe out your squad even in wide formation anyway.

I recently observed another tactics. People put their squad in close formation and hide it in a building near the objective within distance they can still hold the ground and use them only as a mobile spawn point since bots that are in your squad seems to not help much and die fast. I haven’t tried it yet but it was always done by top players so I guess it is efficient. When flanking I time to time stumble upon such soldier stash and it is always bunch of very easy kills.

This tactic is present since day one tbh. Sadly it’s the most effective way to use AI as far as I know.
That’s why we have range limit on “hold the ground” order, to limit such behaviour.

its a super dumb tactic when playing on the attacking side

I used to think wide was best too, but standard gives you a little more concentrated fire imho, for defence / offence, but to be honest individual orders work best for me, I just wish you could ensure the bots looked in that direction sometimes they seem to point where you spot which can be behind them, but you still want them covering the flank if you know what I mean…

In trenches standard works quite well, plus the ai doesn’t run over and around the trench line so much.

For wining? Yes.
For personal score? No.

everyone does this
