I have a terrible idea: the T20 rifle
The T20 was select fire M1 Garand developed in 1944-1945 by the US. It was adapted to take BAR magazines and had a fully automatic capability.
It did not see service, but would be stupid/fun.

I wouldn’t consider it an MG or an assault weapon.
Fg 42 2 is not MG or an assault weapon.
The FG42 is Goering’s whim. The guy wanted a carbine powered by rifle ammunition for his paratroopers. In addition, single fire is from a closed bolt, and automatic fire from a free open bolt. Miracles on a stick.
Not the FG-42, but what they would consider it in game.
