                                                                                                            The Remington-Thompson Model 1923 was an experimental variant of the Thompson submachine gun, designed to be a heavier, more powerful version with increased range. It featured a longer barrel, a bipod, and a horizontal handguard, and was chambered for the .45 Remington-Thompson cartridge, a more powerful round than the standard .45 ACP. While some prototypes were produced, the Model 1923 did not gain widespread military adoption.

Yes part of the whole intermediate hunt for a cartridge between pistol and full rifle, that lead to the m1 carbine. The 303 was too big for fully automatic guns but pistol cartridges like the 9mm and 45 were too small.
