The recent update to AA guns and how it balances with SPAA and ability to defend

The most recent update to the AA guns reduced their overall damage, but increased fragmentation damage. Unfortunately, this has made the stationary AA guns built by engineers nearly worthless.

Now, I know that someone will pop in and say “well they sped up the reload so its ok”. It’s NOT. The predicament is that you may be able to reload faster, but that doesn’t mean anything if the rounds don’t do adequate damage in the first place.

Several games now in Moscow (playing as Allies) I’ve gotten repeatedly steamrolled because the enemy aircraft is flying around without much of anything to counter it… Didn’t they just implement the new SPAAs? The GAZ-MM should be dealing with aircraft? It doesn’t. At all. Due to their ability to reposition, they are more focused on killing infantry than ever dealing with aircraft.

In those same games we were constantly getting hit by bomber raids and player controlled aircraft, while at the same time ATTEMPTING to hold a defense. It could not be done. The SPAA were only focused on single alleyways, the stationary AA that I was trying to use was completely incapable of taking down aircraft, and we couldn’t get enough troops to the objectives to hold them. Not to mention that because I was trying to deal with the aircraft problem, nobody else seemed to be able to get an engineer forward to set up defenses to slow the ground assault.

To note: on the aircraft I was hitting with a stationary AA.

  • Bomber raid planes took at least 3 full mags (20-21 rounds) to even force it off course, let alone kill it.
  • Player operated aircraft sustained some hits on first pass, then came back for an average of 2-3 more passes before enough damage was done to bring it down.

SUGGESTIONS:

  1. Increase damage done by stationary AA. It needs to be capable of taking down aircraft within 7 hits.

  2. Allow stationary AA to angle down to the ground. This allows players to make use of anti-air without having to be completely worthless to the rest of the battlefield. It’s still not as powerful as HMG or SPAA against infantry, so its not OP in any way, but it would still be able to contribute.

  3. Make friendly fortified weapons appear to allies on the minimap and as a floating icon when they get near them. In addition, add in callouts like “use the Anti-Aircraft” or “Use the AT field gun”.

  4. Give some time (even a just a minute) between objectives, where the attacking force is not allowed to push into the next objective, HOWEVER, attackers that are killed behind a certain line do not count against tickets. This allows defenders time to properly regroup and do at least some fortification without getting constantly attacked. In addition, it allows attackers to regroup without fear of losing tickets to remnant defending forces.

The aim circle is broken dont use it, AA work fine one hit kill most of the time

I’m getting tons of hit markers, and I’m only using the indicator as a guideline. I adjust my aim to hit specific parts, and I see the rounds landing, however it just doesn’t appear to do enough damage to them.

Can confirm on the receiving end
Plane damage is chip damage
AA damage is nearly always crippling hits in very rapid succession ruining multiple modules per hit

Those are an utter lie
The only ones you can trust is when you can see them visibly explode on the plane

hitmarker is due because your shots just graze it without actually hitting it, there’s no problem damaging bombers using the aim circle because they fly in a straight line, but as soon as a player’s plane moves a bit more the aim circle goes crazy and changes position sometimes you too will have noticed that it repositions itself too much even for small manoeuvres

I AM SEEING THEM HIT. That’s my point. I’m getting both hit markers (indicating that I hit) and visibly seeing small “explosions” where I am hitting. Its still not doing adequate damage.

Right before this update, I would have agreed with you that it was taking down aircraft very effectively. HOWEVER, since they changed it, it does not.

Gastano. I know full well how its supposed to work. I’ve been playing for almost a year now. I know that the indicator is more of a GUIDELINE.

I’m saying that I am seeing the hits around the main body of the plane, and around the base of the wings, which is where I generally try to aim. Prior to now, it was doing just fine. However, it seems now that instead of doing direct damage to what it hits, its spreading that damage out to all the surrounding parts, therefore taking significantly longer to take them down.

The ONLY exception is when an aircraft is flying straight at me, an all my shots land directly through the front nose of the plane.

I’m not saying you’re lying, im saying because of the uncalibrated aiming system for the new AA you end up hitting areas of the plane that deflect shots or zones that absorb damage, several players have experienced being unable to hit enemies planes, or to take him out in a single hit, you have to wait either for the developers to remove the aim circle or to fix it and standardize this damage system again

There is nothing wrong in your skill, is the game who is as always broken in something

Unfortunately given how fast aircraft move, it would be nearly impossible to get an accurate bead on them without the guide circle.

The thing that a lot of people don’t seem to be considering about the game vs historically is that it was almost NEVER a single AA was trying to deal with an aircraft. Unfortunately within the game, there usually isn’t the luxury of multiple AAs trying to take down a plane.
The shots have to be on target faster, hence the guide circle.
Unless they make AI capable of using AA (which it seems strange to me that a player can build 2, but only operate 1 at a time), I don’t foresee them removing that circle.

AI AA already exist @tommyZZM was able to do it in the editor with some work and the result was perfect, a bit to perfect…

Regarding the rest, is possbile hit the enemy plane withaut the guide, it need practice, but for the moment we can do nothing aside wait dev fix whatever dont work in the new AA system

Again is true that you are hitting them but the game as always is broken and probably you are doing not fatal damage for a motive or another

I think it’s just the Russians AA that’s weak, the rest are fine IMO.

The American AA shoots way too fast though, eats through ammo.

maybe its russians (which would be odd as the Russians is a 25mm, over 20mm). I have only used the germans and the americans/british but they still wreck planes.

Heck planes are decently fragile, I have even gone back to gunning them out of the sky with BARS and MG 34

I am actually quite happy with where planes are at for the moment. So much better than back in the day they were flying tanks,
