The problem with punishing players who disconnect

I heard in a video that the developers made a post listing some issues with the game, including player desertion and their replacement by bots (which is probably the main issue in the game right now), and that to fix that, they were considering informing players of the consequences of desertion and, if after that they continued to desert, block them from joining matches.

This sounds good, but it would create a huge and potentially game-breaking issue for a lot of players. You see, I have issues with ping sometimes. I play in the North America server and have an average ping of ~140 (which is not an issue) on most matches. However, in some matches (about 20% of them) I get over 200 (which causes issues and gives me a disadvantage in game). So, when I see that I have high ping I instantly disconnect (sometimes seconds after joining the match, in order not to harm other people by being replaced by a bot).

I quickly realized that the reason I get high ping only in some of the matches is because they are hosted in Western North America, much farther away from where I live (most matches in the NA server being hosted in Eastern or Middle North America). This isn’t something that affects just me. I’m in Brazil, everyone here (and in other places in South America, like Argentina) gets the same issue. Every player from Brazil that I’ve talked to does the same thing as I do - instantly disconnect from the game when they see they have high ping. People in East Asia also likely have these issues when trying to play in the NA server (though they get higher ping from the matches not hosted in Western North America).

If we get blocked from playing due to disconnecting a few times because of high ping, I think it would likely make me (and several other people in South America) stop playing the game altogether. It would also greatly annoy average and new players who disconnect because they don’t like the map and make them less likely to continue playing the game. You can’t force people to play maps that they don’t like (because the current matchmaking doesn’t give them a choice), just like you can’t force people to play the game at a disadvantage due to high ping.

I don’t want new servers to fix this, that would split the player-base. But if you ever implement measures against players who disconnect, please give a few minutes of grace after joining a battle, in order not to punish those who HAVE TO disconnect due to high ping or other issues. It’s not like we are harming anyone by leaving seconds after joining and getting replaced by other players. Don’t forget this and make the big mistake of handing punishments indiscriminately!

in this game nowadays they want to punish everything. quite literally. bunnyhoppers? punish them. suicided bombing? punish them. dessertors? punish them. you have your squads full with explosive packs? punish them. drop shotting? punish them. greyzone campers? punish them. people that only use auto fire? punish them. After seeing keofox feedback document i was kind of confused. This people started this game without thinking any consecuences about everything i mentioned and then a year later they wanna change all that. There is people that has pay good money and has put good time into getting things exactly how they want, only to see themselves nerfed or punished afterwards

Add to that that at least on XSX latest version of the client crashes due to lack of memory every other day…

until we dont have the option to choose only invasion or conquest batles and or maps i guess i ill be punished alot by this

Already proposed the solution for this. Remove every gun and give everyone a musket. 99% posts asking for nerfs will be gone

Or at least make Conquests giving more exp. Rn the amount you earn regardless of winning/losing is just pittyful. Literally waste of time

in a invasion you would probably have done 70k+

I realize you’re talking about connectivity but I have issues with disconnect/quit match penalties.

I get tired of defending 3, 4, 5 maps in a row. I also tire of defending the same map twice in a row. I also tire of attacking the same map twice in a row. I’ve gotten to the point where I just leave at the beginning of the match when this happens.

If we had a server browser showing available match, the map, and showing which team is attack/defend this leaving the match would be avoided.

If we had map rotations(with random variables) and a persistent lobby where Axis defends one match then attacks next match, this leaving the match could be avoided.

Some that you listed really need to be addressed, tho.

Not a punishment, but more like a rebalance to make the game more enjoyable.

If you say that suicide bombing-cycling, greyzone campers, desertion, unrealisticly fast&abusive drop shooting and bunnyhopping, and detpack spam aren’t a problem and should stay there. Might as well reintroduce reduced spread of LMG while walking, 30s arty cooldown for radio squad, and multiple arty going up at the same…because all nerf is bad

Before they punish players who disconnect I would welcome an option to return to the battle.

I had multiple times problems of internet instability the recent days and its VERY frustrating when you fight a great battle for 40-50 minutes only to be perhaps 5 minutes away from victory, then your internet disconnects for 30 seconds and ALL the points and achievements you would have gotten are simply gone.

Apart from the problem you described for your location there’s also the point of missions: If your missions require you to play a few matches of Axis in Normandy and also to conquer points - well then the matchmaker should better only put you in matches where the axis actually CAN capture points. Right now this might one of the major reasons why people disconnect at the beginning of a match - since there are no disadvantages for quitting they naturally just skip to the next battle… or the next… or the next. Yet if you start to punish these people you force them to play through lots of matches despite knowing that they are wasting their time as they cant even fulfill their missions. While not being a huge problem either I doubt that this would be welcomed.

I know that quitters are a huge problem and very much welcome “punishment” in form of income mali for future battles or a timeout for those who purposeful disconnect but I would prefer Darkflow would also consider carefully the effects and make preparations BEFORE they just make a major change and then see how it works out.

This has been happening to a friend and myself occasionally being disconnected from the match and then not being able to re-join the battle.

I dropped 40 mins into a game and then had to sit here while my friends finished the match a few times.
Until we are able to rejoin a server we have been disconnected from they should hold off on punishment.
