In an ideal setting, pilots have to be worried about enemy pilots coming after them. Because fighter pilots mulch attacker pilots, right?
Except that’s not the meta.
There’s no merit dogfighting against someone behind your tail. It’s a waste of time. Just eject out and join the battlefield again as 1 guy with an SMG. Let whoever had the misfortune of spawning in a fighter pilot decide how he’s going back to the battlefield.
To go off on a tangest, in the first place, dogfighting is a niche role in Enlisted. Attackers are listed into two categories.
- Good for a single strike
- Good for repeated strikes
Why? Time spent in the air is time not spent attacking on the ground. Whatever multikill you have isn’t going to have a lasting effect if you need over a minute to fly to the rearming station and then back to the battlefield.
- The prime thing ranking planes from being useful is having a payload large enough to justify being away from the battlefield
- The plane flies quickly enough that there’s minimal downtime between bombing runs.
It’s precisely this reason why the P-47, Ju-188, A-20G, IL-2M type 2 and SB-2M are the more useful bombers you see lurking around. And why stukas, other IL-2s, Bf-110s, P-38s etc all nosedive to their deaths instead of coming back for a bombing run.
You don’t need a fighter plane to get rid of a suicide-bombing plane. You would have been stuck with a fighter with an almost-useless payload after you get rid of 1 of the above planes, and they’d have ejected out and entered the battlefield back in the time you’ve spent trying to shoot them down.
The pilot perks are as pointless as these: Please rework less useful perks
And the “meta” alternative to planes is quite literally to turn “pilots” into walking monstrosities with mines, 2 submachine guns, extra vitality and TNT.
After all, there’s no merit actually fighting in the air. Whatever time was spent defending from someone on your tail is time that could’ve been spent on the battlefield, and parachutes already give players a consistent option to do so.
The perks are as pointless as fighter planes. Please rework air combat, in general, and give the pilot perks more impact.
