Intoroduction
In the latest news, “Pacific levels - News - Enlisted”, lots of Japanese weapons were introduced but translation of weapons have problems.
Also, among English gun fandam, there are very strange habit when translate Japanese weapons so it makes serious confusion.(I’m Japanese so I don’t know well about reason)
Different to other games, this game treats really lots of weapons, so accurate translations are necessary to avoid confusion so I suggest to improve quality of them.
Example of confusion caused by bad translation:
ENLISTED(エンリステッド)- DMM GAMES
Agency of this game in Japan, DMM could not translate name of the “Type 1 SMG”.
In spite of name of this weapon is “試製一型機関短銃 / Experimental Model 1 Machine Pistol”, developers translated it as “Type 1” SMG not “Model 1” so they thought it means “一式 / Type 1” which means adopted in 1941.
In Japan, automatic-firing weapon which labeled “Type 1 / 一式” is only Experimental Type 1 Light Machine Gun, so they translated as it.
By strange reason, in case of names of the gun, four different words (年式, 式, 型, 号) were not distinguished and all of them are translated to “Type”. Because of this system, there are multiple problems. For example, in English name it is impossible to distinguish 南部式機関短銃一号(Nambu Machine Pistol Number 1) and 試製一型機関短銃 (Experimental Model 1 Machine Pistol) because both guns are translated to Nambu Type 1 SMG.
Also, in-game names seems to have multiple translation errors.
So how should we translate it?
式 = Type, 年式 = Year Type, 型 = Model, 号 = Number
For example:
- 三式: Type 3
- 三年式: 3rd Year Type
- 三型: Model 3
- 三号: No 3
Suggestion to change:
-
Arisaka Type 38 carbine → Type 38 Carbine
- Just remove “Arisaka”. Japanese weapons does not have such prefix.
-
S1-100 → Type Su SMG
- In Japan, this weapon was called ス式自動拳銃 / Type Su automatic pistol. Su is a initial of Steyr.
-
Type 1 Rifle → Type I Rifle
- “I” is an initial of Italy, not “one”.
-
Type 11 LMG → 11th Year Type LMG
- It was 十一年式(11th Year Type), not 十一式 (Type 11). “11th Year Type” means it was adopted in Taisho 11 = 1922, but “Type 11” means it was adopted in Imperial Era 2511 = 1851 or Imperial Era 2611 = 1951.
-
Type 99 rifle → Type 99 short rifle
- I guess it means Type 99 short rifle. Type 99 rifle is longer and rare version, and standard rifle of late war Japanese army was Type 99 short rifle.
-
MP 28 (7.63 mm) → Type Be SMG
- In Japan, this weapon was called ベ式自動拳銃 / Type Be automatic pistol. Be is a initial of Bergmann.
- This weapon is SIG-Bergmann M1920, not MP28 and caliber was 7.63 mm.
-
Type 97 LMG → Type 97 Vehicle-Mounted HMG
- It is heavy machine gun for tanks and armored cars, but it can equip bipod to operate as light machine gun. But it is NOT a LMG.
- Perhaps it is good to omit “車載 / Vehicle-Mounted” section.
-
Type 5 rocket launcher → Type 5 45 mm recoilless gun
- At least, anti-tank weapon labeled as Type 5 is only 試製五式四十五粍簡易無反動砲/Experimental Type 5 45 mm simple recoilless gun. It is recoilless gun like Panzerfaust, not a rocket launcher as Bazooka.
-
Type 2a SMG → Model 2 SMG Improved
- I guess it is 試製二型機関短銃改良車載型 / Experimental Model 2 mahcine pistol, Improved vehicle-mounted type, a tanker’s model of Experimental Model 2 machine pistol.
-
Type 1 SMG → Model 1 SMG (preorder squad’s weapon)
- It is 試製一型機関短銃 / Experimental Model 1 machine pistol.
