Su-85

Hello bajtársak and fellow forumdwellers,

With the appearance of the new generation of tanks, pioneered by the Tiger I and Panther, the Red Army was forced to look for a new more powerful main gun for their tanks than the 76mm F-34.

For this purpose, the Soviets followed the German initiative, converting the 85mm M1939 AA gun to anti-tank duty and developing a version for tanks.

The new cannon, the D-5T was a very powerful armament against both enemy infantry as well as armour, finally giving Soviets tank crews a fair chance at engaging German Tiger I and Panther tanks at realistic combat ranges.

Though it was originally planned to install the D-5T inside the T-34, the reality of the T-34´s limitations forced designers to look for a quicker alternative until such a design could be realised without any major disruption in T-34 production.

As a stopgap solution, the SU-85 entered production, with about 2650 produced between 1943 and 44, until the D-5T was finally mounted inside a T-34 and SU production was diverted to the SU-100.

Please note that we already have in game the SU-85M, a tank destroyer with the same gun as the SU-85 but much thicker frontal armour and major weak spots eliminated.

SU85 on the left, SU-85M on the right

The SU-85 has the same frontal armour as the T-34 thus any BR2-3 Japanese or German tank fight the SU-85 on equal ground while the SU-85 would finally be able to take on German Panther G, something current Soviet BR3 tanks are simply incapable of.

The SU-85 packs a BR4 gun with BR3 armour, but no turret and no MG. I believe it would be a great addition for BR3 Soviets that lack BR3 tanks with good armour penetration. Capable of fighting BR4 tanks, but still defeatable by BR2 tanks in the hands of skilled players.

I thought it’s alright in the soviets TT, or is that a different one?

I’m not sure either, don’t we have it as a premium already? Or one very similar…

That’s the Su 100 I’m pretty sure.

As he mentioned in the post, the version that is inside the TT is the SU 85M, which has more armor than the SU85.

Yes. There is no Su85 in the premiums. There is only Su85m in the TT.

Then why do we need the Su 85? I doubt that barely anyone would use it.

Well, an 85mm cannon for BR3 is a very interesting choice. But we can’t send the SU85m to BR3, because it has relatively good armor. In contrast, the regular SU85 fits easily in BR3.

Because it has weaker armor then the M? I think I got it.

Yes, valkay showed both of their armor in this picture.

I dont mind, But after BR ± 0.

BR 2 HEAT and 50mm love to bounce off that Slope.

Anyone familiar with Trolling Warthunder with the Su-122 when it was BR 2.3 lol

Speaking of SU-122…now theres a good time!

I still wish for the 152… because Boom. could make just as big a splash as the br2 axis open gun carrier, but higher br because it’s fully armoured.

I always loved to make fireworks with other tanks, using that one.

my favourite part of the tank is actually using the AA gun on it :stuck_out_tongue:

IF you swap to machine gun mode only you have crazy traverse. planes dont excpect it :stuck_out_tongue: (in Warthunder anyway)

i believe the T34-85E Premium have this D-5T Cannon… but cant confirm it, i’m at Work

Well since STUG III F should also be lowered to BR2, I dont see an issue with that.

Long 50mm has it difficult to pen T34 frontal armor - which is practically identical to SU85, but it generally speaking is “possible” - not to mention KV1 armor will be supperior no matter what.

Perfect with br 3

yes, but SU-85 has weakspots, the biggest being the gun mantlet which can be penetrated from any angle with 75 mm KwK37 (Panzer IV E/F1) using HEAT shells and naturally the 50 mm KwK.39/1 (Puma/Pz III J) which has even more pen.

So yes, BR2 Axis tanks will have to aim for weakspots and the lower part of the hull depending on how angled the SU-85 is, but that is still very fair considering that (sadly) many tanks are usually incapable of fighting enemy tanks in an uptier.

true, only downside of the KV-1 is that it is useless against BR4 German tanks.

yep and also T-34-85 (D-5T), as I said the SU-85 packs a BR4 gun, but with BR3 armour and no turret, no MG.
