I think it would be great to be able to split squads for flanking. For example, you have a mixed squad of riflemen, assaulters, and a gunner. It would be nice to leave the rifleman and the gunner behind cover as they engage an enemy, while the player leads the assaulters to attack from the side of the same enemy their fellow squad members are firing at.
