I don’t play soviets much put imo it’s a bit dissapoiting how the armor works.
Make armor a backpack item that gives a decent protection from pistol caliber bullets that hit chest (takes +1 hit to down for example) + maybe a small protection from rifle caliber bullets. If this turns out to be OP, add a speed penalty or remove protection against rifles.
This way it’s a fully fleshed out item instead of current weird state where it’s kind of an item and kind of a cosmetic.
I havent seen it confirmed anywhere but on one of the old Datamines it said having Body armor gave 10% damage reduction. Do you know if this is from an old system? or still attached to the cosmetic?
Certainly a good idea though not always did the body armor add a lot of protection. The CH-42 (the Soviet armor I think is commonly displayed) AKA the steel bib was not amazing. It stopped some pistol caliber bullets at close ranges, shrapnel, and on rare cases machine gun calibers. However rifle rounds still went through majority of the time. You hope for a ricochet from the curvature of the armor. The best part is the fact it can’t be stabbed through. Finally steel and iron core 9mm still penetrated it before newer models became thicker to accommodate a change in munitions. Though this change wasn’t done till '46. Modern standards classify it as Class 2 body armor.
The other thing worth mentioning is that it was ONLY given to Assault Engineering and Sapper Brigades on the Soviet side. They have many mixed reviews as they are a major hindrance while prone and crawling.
From there the history of steel cuirasses in other armies and their applications are mixed. The Germans made their own but the Americans appear to have not. The Germans also captured many Soviet breastplates, of these breast plates they once again gave them only to SS and Assault squads.
I would enjoy the idea but here I would really appreciate historical accuracy. Not every soldier is given access to a 2mm steel plate on their chest.
It could be limited to assaulters and engineers.
Though tbh I don’t see any reason to do this besides HA. And as we know enlisted kind of doesn’t care about such “details”.
That’s why I want to make it an item with proper stats, pros and cons. So it’s not a gimmick that gives a marginal boost.
More items, mechanics and choices = better.
I wouldn’t mind if the other factions get some body armor because they certainly did toy around with the idea but probably didn’t use it as much as the Soviets. They could probably be added as Special Squads because it was more rarer for the other factions, but who knows they could just be regular customizations.
Obviously it’s damage protection is very negligible, but it’s a neat customization item anyway
