Because with it they can carry a med kit also or I suppose more tools if those would be usable.
Sure, I use small backpack on my tankers exactly for that purpose. But I don’t know what you mean by:
They work fine with tanks. Just don’t work with cars and planes.
Each time you repair a tank it uses up a tool kit - occasionally I’ve found myself outside trying to repair and not have the option with that crewman - change to another with an unused kit to do it.
So I have large backpacks with most of my crew so they carry 2 repair and 2 medkits each.

How many times do you have to repair your tank lol. I feel like I’ve only had to repair once in 10 games
AS often as I need - most often not at all - you just die, but sometimes there will be 2-3 times a game. Probably more often with T-28 'cos you have 6 crew and don’t get OHK-ed by 20 and 37mm killing everyone.
Same with medkits - tankers use them a lot.

This is exactly my point it gives you the option to carry more tools but I was not sure if ya could run out I think I have run out before its kind of weird when ya can’t repair it …
Often as soon as I’m hit especially when I notice I am outgunned I immediately reverse evade and repair I’m often when using a tank doing the Fury … like the movie except its just one guy left blasting enemy until I get taken out …
Absolutely - backing out to repair, or repairing with last guy to climb back in and die heroically manning the gun… sucks to be a pixel trooper in this game - very short life expectancy!!
