This problem is remedied by welding on extra armor plate in around 1943. Why does the Sherman II have this thin patch of armor at the turret in the first place?

I think it was purposely designed like that to give space for an important component.
Thank you, I’ve just found a warthunder post stating that the armor need to be thin to make room for the power traverse mechanism.
