This has been a long time coming, but I think sappers need to be added as a counterpart to engineers.
While engineers are specialized in construction, sappers would be specialized in demolition.
Sapper tools:
-Bangalore torpedo- it’s a demolition charge on a stick, which existed in WWII. These should be able to be pushed around corners and demolish any engineer fortification in a small radius. I imagine sappers having a limited number of these, but more than 1, maybe 2 or 3.
-Pioneer axe- rather than a rare melee weapon, axes could be exclusive to sappers, and each sapper would start with one. This could speed up demolition time while you’re holding it, or alternatively it could take big chunks out of the demolition meter by striking something with it.
Unlike bangalore torpedos, the axe would be unlimited use.
-reworked TNT- instead of being thrown and considered a grenade, TNT could be placed on the ground and have a long delay before detonating, like it does in Post Scriptum. It would change its primary purpose to demolition (like destroying the big walls on Normandy Beach), while AT grenades and buffed molotovs could take its place in the AT role.
Perhaps sappers could take up the engineer class’s benefit of having extra equipment slots, while engineers would have something different like the ability to repair damaged fortifications.
If we get mines then they may get a mine detector.
Also things like wire cutters to deconstruct barbed wire. Although they may be too specialised to bother.
Magnetic AT mines were a thing and are essentially what you’re asking for (they’re not mines in the sense you would think), but only the axis used them.
That’s definitely a good idea, the Soviets even made a conversion for the mosin nagant to use it for mine sweeping better than poking with a bayonet. Only question is who would use it and when.
I meant placing it directly on the ground rather than throwing it, not sticking it to a wall.
I was thinking sortof the same thing considering some of them are already labeled as “pioneer companies” which are the same as sappers, but having a guy with a flamethrower doing sapper stuff is strange.
Flamethrower would be one of options. For example you would have to choose between ft and demolition kit.
I may give more precise ideas tommorow when we see slightly changed equipment system.
The only thing I can think of is leaving TNT alone but having it destroy barbed wire like it does sandbags. (If it already does my experience fortifying the bunkers on Normandy says it’s rare) I would prefer a new explosive (Satchel charge) for wall demolition.
The Satchel Charge would have the same pro’s and con’s you suggested.
I would also add option to remove small trees and bushes. Just like raming them with the tank.
It’s annoying that I have to use vehicles to remove them.
