Replace 390th Infantry Regiment in Pacific

Based on what research I’ve done this US Army regiment didn’t see any combat in WW2, just trained for the possible invasion of mainland Japan, did guard duty in Hawaii, and occupied Japan post war.

I think it would be better to replace them with a Marine regiment that saw acitve combat in the Pacific. (We have no Marine rifle squads in game, the amount of US Marine squads in general are few in game compared to US Army squads)

The marines were better at PR than the army: because they did a minority of the fighting in the Pacific but got most of the glory.

There were 6 marine divisions in the Pacific compared to ~25 army divisions. The army did most of the fighting, most of the killing and most of the dying in the Pacific. They even performed far more amphibious assaults than the marines. If anything the marines are over represented in enlisted.

Having said that; the marines get all the assault and lmg and most of the vehicle squads, while the army gets the rest. It would be nice if they mixed it up a bit more.

I believe the US army primarily fought in places like New Guinea and the Philippines, whereas the Marine and US Navy conducted the island hopping campaign on places like Tarawa, Guadalcanal, Saipan, Iwo Jima, etc.

This was the result of a bit of a schism between the Army and Navy. General Mac Arthur actually complained to the president saying “these frontal attacks by the Navy, as at Tarawa, are tragic and unnecessary massacres of American lives“

Wherever there were Marines, there were army units. They fought across the Pacific alongside the Marines at almost every stop.

Tarawa: 27th ID, army; roughly an equal number of soldiers to Marines

Guadalcanal: more army units than I care to list. It was a joint battle that saw us army and Marine units fighting from the beginning to end

Iwo Jima: one of the few large battles that was mostly fought by the marines, although the 147th IR, army is listed in the order of battle so the army was there too.

I was surprised myself when I realized how much the marines image in the Pacific overshadowed the vast contribution of the US army. If you’re interested in the history it’s a good subject to read up on.
