they should just make all D rifles purchasable again tbh, or transform all new kar98s into the D version

What even differentiates the two rifle types? Just the fact they came from legacy squads? They should make the squads and removed campaign weapons available again.
It’d be cool to run Soviets with Thompsons and bredas.
If a rifle has a (D) it means it can be given to ANY SOLDIER (excluding pilot/tanker). For example, machine gunners can equip the Kar98(D) but not the regular Kar98
It has extremely niche applications for BR1 where you could use a machine gun squad only equipped with bolt actions so you can still build HMGs with the engineer. Or the same thing with a flamer squad and an ampulet launcher.
The kar98 is a better default gun than the gewehr 33 if you want to use machine gunners or flamethrowers at BR1 for the engineer buildables
