Remove the ability to command AI to break down friendly fortifications, and add more useful interactions for AI

Right now, if you order your AI to interact with a built structure, they run up and deconstruct it, rather than any other useful action. For example:

  • -All too often I come across people that are breaking down friendly sandbags, not on purpose, but because they are trying to get their AI to make use of cover that it provides.

  • -Currently if a player runs out of ammo and switches characters, telling the AI to go interact with an ammo box. Instead of refilling its ammo, it breaks down the box!

  • (Suggestion) I don’t think AI should be capable of running AT field guns or HMGs, however, they should be able to at least hop on basic MG nests, and able to occupy open AA and operate them, if the player is also on an AA.

  • (Suggestion) The player is able to build 2 AAs at a time, but can only use one at a time. If an AI hops on the second, they should be able to attempt to shoot at whatever aircraft the player is targeting as well. I’m not talking about 100% accuracy, but even 25% accuracy would help.

  • (Suggestion) AI manning a basic MG turret I don’t feel would be OP. They should treat it the same as if they were holding a MG, but would only focus on a specific area. If a player walks up and tries to take control, they can, but if they leave it, the AI will jump back on it. This frees up the player to keep setting up structures while still being covered.

  • (Suggestion) If a sandbag is targeted, the AI should always try to take cover on whichever side it was targeted from. If there are multiple sandbags nearby, they will use those as well.

I agree, it’s stupid for them to destroy it

Thumbs up from me. I have done that so many times where (mainly due to my fat fingers) I thought I ordered my squads to stay put, and instead they destroy my hard built and expensive HMG nest right as I’m trying to use it! So annoying.

Agreed, especially the sandbag cover suggestion.

This is a great idea! I have a question, though: is it currently possible to order AI to deconstruct enemy structures/fortifications? Or only friendly ones?

The ability to order the removal of friendly fortifications is only present when you’re using an engineer, and I’ve used such abilities to tear down emplacements I no longer need, or find friendly emplacements being less-than-useful. There’s no reason to remove the ability itself.

Micromanaging squad AI is largely pointless given their lifespan and expected effectiveness.

You can also just position them in places where enemy AI can’t react to them fast enough.

Half-baked defensive AI used to man emplacements is a gateway to them getting better as people complain that they should do more, and that slippery slope where you can eventually just ask an AI to crew an emplacement and do all the work is present.

The time and effort spent on AI is better spent doing something more productive than what’s essentially setting up practice targets.

It won’t do anything to help against fighting real players who would just mow down the AI. At the present moment, the AI is competent enough to seek cover whenever possible, as indicated by the shield on their icons.
