It’s as simple as the title says:
Aircraft in this game are incredibly resilient to damage. This makes flying fighters fairly ineffective because attackers can dive on their target and drop their payload (and even bail out) before their aircraft takes any substantial damage. It also makes dogfights lame and boring, because it barely feels like shooting my enemy is doing any damage to them.
The solution is fairly simple: decrease the amount of damage an aircraft can take before taking critical damage (like losing a part of a wing, or losing control of the surfaces, or catching fire, or leaking fuel/oil). I’m sure the classic War Thunder comparisons have been done to death by now, but the time-to-kill is fairly quick for aircraft. It feels responsive and like your bullets are actually doing something. Why not borrow some of their damage models?

it’s gotten to a point where I just disable my opponent’s engine and fly away because chasing them gets boring.

As a main fighter pilot on this game, I have had my days where that IL2 in Moscow, just wouldn’t go down after several attack runs, with my 109 firing cannons too. ((This may somewhat be due to the low calibre of the guns in Moscow?)
In Normandy the p38 and p47 seemed indestructible, now they are not, it maybe as I changed planes and now use FW190, but the real reason is the distance I open fire…
For Mgs it doesn’t really matter in my opinion, these allow for lucky pilot snipes or engine damage but you will rarely see a wing, tail or anything else fall off.
BUT the Cannons, especially on Axis planes appear to have a damage drop off, I can now consistently catch on fire any 38, 47 in Normandy, as I wait until the plane is double my reticle, then it’s just a half second burst.
I think more pilots could corroborate this, but there appears to be a damage drop off distance on cannons, I know the IL2s in Berlin, take less than half a second to shoot down and usually blow tails off in my FW190D.
I am not saying there not dodgy instances related to synchronisation either, I’m sure they are, but now I changed tactic and plane (when axis), I can consistently get kills and no longer have to track enemies and go for rearms…
Just my thoughts on the subject.

yeah i dont think that an aircraft should survive like 20 shots with 20mm

Have you ever flewn German planes ? all they have to do is sneeze on you and youre injured that you barely can fly. Sometimes you get lucky though. How ever the 30mm chews planes for breakfast but are hard to aim in as it usually are used for short range engagements
But 13 and 20 mm can crit allies planes quite fast though if youre lucky and even p47 can go down quite fast sometimes
I fly exclusively german. The 20mms are harmless at best.
even worse, If you are insane enough to follow your opponent into doing minute long dogfights … you’ll end up potentially losing your match, because you are not participating at the battle what so ever.
Air combat is always a very “weird” thing to balance properly, speaking as a “battlefield” vet, either these planes are super OP and broken having a good pilot will win the match, or its just a “gimmick” that should be avoided in order to play the f**ing objective.
I personally really like the way planes played during Moscow CBT, one bomb could kill 30 ppl, however one MG gunner was enough to take down planes that got too close to the battlefield.
Right now “most” planes deal mediocre dmg to infantry and tanks with the exception of rockets and some planes that drop A LOT of big bombs at once - and all that while planes are practically “invulnerable” to ground forces.
Stuff needs to change…

And ive done this to P47s couple of times asw…But sure even the US squishiest fighter P51C can tank an full mag at times but most times not…which is a weird thing.
Will get you more later when i start to record a full star FW190

Yeah American planes can be a bit more flammable, but I still think all of the planes in the game are too spongey. A fighter holding air superiority should be able to prevent attackers from doing stuff in the battlespace.
