Redesign: Aircraft Controls

A complete redesign of the Aircraft controls in the game would be much appreciated, as flying a plane feels absolutely awful. The plane controls should be simplified to WASD and using Shift to accelerate, and ctrl to decrease speed similar to how they already are but with the removal of the unneeded controls. Removing the mouse as a control should also be done as it seems pointless to have the mouse control how I fly and also have WASD control how I fly, I found that trying to fly upwards was an uphill struggle as using S to pull up was countered by my mouse staying in its previous position making fly downwards into a fiery inferno of death. Something you should consider is the controls of flying in the game Far Cry 5 which featured planes in first person with incredible ease of flying using the controls I suggested above, furthermore, a tutorial of flying in the game’s tutorial itself should also be featured as it only covers basic infantry movement and combat aswell as basic tank movement and combat.

No thanks - I do fine with mouse and WASD as they are currently.

Yeah I agree. The current system is the most intuitive coming from War thunder, and without mouse aim making fine adjustments when leading enemy planes and aiming rockets would be a chore. Maybe an alternative control scheme or something to accommodate Ghost’s points like what’s present in WarThunder would be cool though.

If anything, they should make planes more challenging to fly so more people favour infantry. Less CAS spam if you need to show some skill to even get to the AO.

WASD is fine so:

using only wasd to fly and airplane that is awful, and i know i come from H&G it’s trash and stupid.

I’d settle for a proper joystick support.

In H&G the only way to fly is using the debug controls. It’s challenging, but very rewarding.

If I recall correctly, there was an update a little way back that made it so the mouse controls are locked when using the WASD keys. Unless the game bugged out in some way, it shouldn’t fight with your key inputs.
Keys as the sole input would be imprecise, making dogfighting near impossible.
Maybe there is room for an alternate option, but it definitely shouldn’t just be WASD. Perhaps the mouse should move the plane’s control surfaces directly, instead of just moving a pointer that tells the plane’s instructor where to go. This would work like in some other games (Mainly Arma, since it has acceptable plane controls, even with a mouse).
The pointer flight controls should still stay, in my opinion. And it should probably still be the default option due to it’s ease of use.

But… you can already remap your keys to your own personal preference…

I’ve made some tests with controls for airplanes and I found kind of solution for your issue. If you really want to get rid of mouse control and only use WASD then you should bind some keys like these:

First you need to bind key of YOUR CHOICE (Num 9 and Num 8 are just my test keys) to what is in green frame here and also in yellow frame.

Using the “Green” one makes your pointer to not work at all, but all your controls will be much more responsive which leads your aircraft to go into stall pretty easily when using WASD keys. That is why you need to use also the “Yellow” one so it turns on “Instructor” limiting your keys response and makes your controls smoother, prevents your from stalling in general.

Both these options together makes you fly with just WASD keys the same way as before but without mouse pointer.

Now if you want some freedom to look around with mouse you should remove any binding to your “Pointer control” that is in “Red” frame here and bind mouse control for “Look around” as I have it here in “Blue” frame. When you do that this way you won’t have any control over your pointer anyway but you can freely look around and control your aircraft with WASD.

The crossed “Purple” frame is my normal controls that you don’t want to use in this set up.

To sum things up, the downside of trying to fly with just WASD without mouse pointer is that your aircraft won’t be stable in flight and you will constantly need to make small adjustments, airplane won’t fly straight and propeller torque will make you bank to one side or the other a little all the time, also you can easily use “Shift” and “Ctrl” for throttle control in options.

Other controls than the default mouse pointer are meant to be used with joystick or controller, so I don’t see much of success flying with just WASD.
