Yeah, I think that’s exactly it too. It’s not a mountain dew, coke head twitch shooter… Well not entirely anyway, I feel like I can have decent reaction times in this game, and the time to kill is extremely short, like, it’s shocking this game has stock weapons that are ultra powerful 1 hit kill bolt actions. BUT, there is no magnets, the hit boxes are small, and it actually takes some effort and time to aim before firing. And the slow bolt actions give you a reason to make sure your shots actually land the first time.
Furthermore, the squads are probably the biggest difference. Admittedly, I’m probably racking up so many kills mainly because most of them are really REALLY dumb AIs. And, when you get killed, you can immediately switch to a squad mate, and counter attack where ever you got shot from, basically giving you a sort of second chance mechanic against whomever was targetting you.
That being said, there is player skill in this. I think slower thinkers can figure out interesting strategies using their entourage of AIs in interesting ways. One game, I ordered my squad to go cap a point while I sit in the bushes on overwatch as a sniper. They defended the point, and I basically used them as bait.
Meanwhile, I think players who come from twitch shooters are more likely to struggle in this game, and then show up on the forums to piss and moan about certain things. Like, I spent one whole game just sitting in a puma machine gunning the same couple of players who would just try to rush across an open field to the capture point, and refused to change their tactics all game… Like… This isn’t COD dude, ever consider dealing with the Puma first? Ever consider changing tactics instead of spawning and charging the objective, just to die to the same thing that killed you last time? Occasionally one of these guys would try to flank me and hit me with a det pack… And then not cook it… And then that would be his only det pack, despite having a whole squad… And then shoot me with his SMG out of frustration… Like, bro, you get so many det packs right off the bat, why dont you have a squad full of det packs to deal with tanks? If I were him, that puma would’ve been surrounded by det packs within about 5 seconds, just swapping troops and chucking packs. You have a squad, use it.
Anyway, yeah, I dunno why, this game just speaks to me on some type of level where most other FPS’s dont. Maybe commanding AIs around lets me use more strategy game skills than a typical FPS.
