If we order them to go somewhere with X they stay so close to each other like homos (no offense) and get themselves easily killed.

Although I agree, I use standard, send them on to attack or defend point, then usually use personal orders to move them better places inside, I haven’t tried sending them on standard, then changing to wide formation actually 
In the past, people complained that when sending them to a point they stood outside the point etc, so I think the devs now have made it so they remain inside, just maybe they need a tweak to spread them out slightly so not all bunched up together… tricky one to master imho.
While there is wide formation, it only really (somewhat) takes effect when your squad is moving. I have been advocating to not only make it more apparent when switching between formations but having it take effect when standing by a squad position order as well.
In the meantime, I recommend using individual squad orders to space your soldiers out after you set a squad position. This way you get the benefit of having them where you want, and if any get detached from their position because you went a little too far, they will opt to go to the squad position you set rather than trying to follow you directly. This strategy is more effective for defense but can still be used for offense when done correctly.

oh the bots are very useful, their main goal is to satisfy the players so that they have a target to shoot, they don’t cover so that you could get lots of kills, it wouldnt be fun going around the map not finding anyone, eventually getting shot in the head as every bot would cover properly and ambush you.
actually the game’s main goal is to babysit YOUR squad alive as best you can

How do you give wide/tight formation and hold fire/fire at will orders? Ever since the update to the command menu I can’t find it anywhere. My squads are stuck in whatever order settings they were at before the change.
If you are using PC: hold Y to enter the soldier selection circle menu, then Q to change squad formation, E to change their behavior.
