I thought when I shot a plane and it was on fire that was it, it would have to be evacuated and I’d get kill, but recently on Tunisia I have shot attackers (SBD, Beaufighters), watched them burst into flames, but as I tracked them to their death, I see the fires go out and plane recover wtf?
I get the fire may go out long enough for pilot to bail, which I actually don’t agree with, If that is the case ok I get we need to give people a chance, but for flames to die out and plane to carry on flying, that has to be wrong surely?!?
Most planes in WW2 had self sealing fuel tanks that would “plug” the bullet holes, cutting off the fuel from the external fire, eventually putting out the fire. As long as no major components are too damaged, the plane can keep flying. This is modelled in WT and Enlisted, and most flight sims.

Ok, so flames doesn’t mean move on, I’ll ensure they go down next time!
Also when I’m on fire I may stay in and see if fire goes out…

This happen even in war thunder is a good feature, one time happen to me to took fire with my spitfire (bad joke) the enemy plane think im dead so him took another way and let me flying on the ground but, some second after the fire stop and the engine die, for my fortune, i was near the airfield so i can land for repeair, and keep flying
Yes thats it.
I have seen before that the screen said “vehicle is on fire” but if you keep flying, the fire might stop.
I guess it depends on the ammount of damage and fire if it stops or not.
Of course, when a plane bursts into flames and goes down, like you said, it should never extinguish and recover.
Anyway, I always follow my kills until they are down for sure.

Thanks, yes it was fun in Tunisia, I was levelling up my Spitfire, 109 too.
As for flames, I’m going to see, if I can fly and extinguish flames, just need to understand the variable, is it speed of plane and that puts flames out or certain maneuvers, hopefully I’ll be able tell before I burn alive…
I always thought it was to allow us to bail and a specific gameplay thing implemented by devs .
One of my “secrets” in the game is:
Engine on fire!
1 - Reduce engine power to 0
2 - Turn Off the engines (need to enable it in keybinding)
3 - Increase Engine power
There is a good chance to engine resist some minutes.
Just Stop engine and High-speed dive
